Walbro 255 primed but not pushing fuel.

Well I installed a Walbro255 today and the end result wasn’t as I suspected. I cut my stock wires on my pump housing, black for ground, and blue for power. Attached the red Walbro wire to the blue, and the black to the black.

My friend did something he probably shouldn’t have done, but he turned the key to hear it prime BEFORE the rear of the car was on the ground, not sure if that damaged the unit though, starting it with no fuel. Well basically I put it back on the ground, had a bit less than 1/2 tank, and the pump would prime as the main relay made it, and it would stop, everything just like normal.

Tried to start it and nothing, primed, primed, primed forever, and no fuel ever came through the fuel filter bleeder screw (took it out), so I dropped the tank, and loosened the banjo bolt that goes to the top of the pump, and NOTHING. You could hear it priming, but no fuel was coming out, and there was plenty of fuel around it. Depressed, cold, and tired my friends friend thought I might have mistalenly got the wires backwards on the pump (I didn’t), so he had me switch the wires at the plug. Now I get nothing, no priming, no main relay clicking, and the CEL doesn’t turn off.

I have no idea what the hell is going on, and I feel just plain defeated and want to just go pass out.

I could really use the help here.

Thanks

Post some pics plz. Maybe we can help if we have a visual reference.

Pictures won’t help, lol. Not for something like this. Basically we dropped the tank at enough of an angle to remove the banjo bolt that goes on the top of the pump assembly. It was surrounded by fuel, turned the key to on to make the main relay prime the pump. We heard it turn on, but pushed no fuel through it. Wires were all hooked up correctly, and after, just to be sure, switched the wires at the cabin harness plug, and still nothing.

Ok when i changed my fuel pump i never had to drop the tank or cut any wires. Is the pump used? I havent changed my fuel pump on my da in years but in my 240 its been a month.

Ok stupid question did u hook up the rubber hose to the right line?

Lol, you never installed a fuel pump in a DA, but did in a 240?.. You have to drop the tank in a DA chassis, there is no access panel like on DC’s and EG’s, 240’s etc. There are 3 areas with 2 hoses each that have to be removed in order for the tank to be taken out from under the car, and the pump assembly removed. And in all 3 areas, there are 2 hoses, each is a different size and style, so no… it’s not backwards.

The stock pump wiring, that goes to the stock pump, is black for ground, and blue for power. The supplied harness with the walbro is red and black, so you can guess how I attached them. The “cutting of the wires” that you mentioned, was because I was told that if I got the polarity backwards when I wired up the pump, it wouldn’t push any fuel. I didn’t get it backwards, but I did it to shut them up. Still didn’t work.

So to sum this all up. I did it right. Perfectly installed the pump, with no issues. However, pump makes noise, but does not push any fuel. And the pump was brand new.

So has anyone who has installed a Walbro in a DA chassis had any problems? I’ve heard some pumps are just faulty out of the box, maybe?

mine works flawlessly i was also thinking maybe someone messed up on the lil rubber hose

Touche i havent changed it in my da but my old dc. Sorry for the mishap. It is pretty explanatory and you really cant go wrong with installing the fuel pump itself if you followed the reverse steps when you took the old one off. Other than bad relay connection or bad pump. I understand how you feel and im sorry i couldnt be much help. If it means anything its 12:44am over here and i can do more research to help you out.

It’s fine, so I’m kinda cranky, lol. But yea, I replaced the fuel pump on my Dads Legend, worked great.

When I first got it in, it would turn on with the main relay making it prime and all, time and time again. Just never pushed any fuel through it. I’ve heard some say that it blew the stock hose apart before, the one that goes from the pump itself to the top(or underside) of the pump housing. I, because I was tired, and thought, “What could go wrong?,” reused the old hose. Perhaps it blew? Not sure, will find out soon. I’m going to drop the tank by myself in my driveway in NE Washington winter…1 word…fun. >_<

But yea, but like everything that’s happened to me when working on cars, If it doesn’t work as it should, it’s almost always something just plain stupid.

Fingers crossed, eh?

Yeah man. Good luck with everything. Sometimes we have to admit to ourselves that we did everything we could and that its just faulty. Let us know how it goes and stay warm. Sucks that nobody is able to help you over there.

Hey just checking in to see how the car is?!?

Dick lick that assembled the fuel pump clip got the wires backwards. Partly my fault for not checking, but partly his, heh. Ordered a new one though with the DA specific mounting kit. But figured I’d strip the surface rust off the tank and coat it with POR. That was supposed to ship from Cali, ended up coming from South Carolina… sigh.

So it’s just chilling right now… waiting. Might pull the hubs tomorrow for my ARP’s, but I also want to blast and paint my calipers so they don’t get any surface rust.
