hey, im not sure if im posting this under the right topic- but im in search of some sort of aluminum plate that could bolt up under my car to protect my header/oil pan from slamming the ground when i bottom out. im sure this is fairly easy to make, however i dont have the tools. anyone know where i could get this made or buy one?
Interesting find. I too would like to know just how difficult it would be to do this or buy one. Chances are we’re gonna have to just measure and cut one up.
You dont really need one for the oil pan. password jdm makes one. its called a skidplate. note these will only fit the jdm itr header and its copies. dotn need it for the stock on either.
ive severely damaged my old header, granted its probably a piece of shit (chikara) but i did bend it. i didnt see the one you were talking about on password- although it prob wouldnt work cause im running a megan racing header… and why wouldnt i have to worry about the oil pan?
Not a bad idea, but kinda unnecessary. The only thing the plate will do is add weight and prevent scratches on the bottom of your header and pan. And I think the fucked up plate will look worse than a scratched header. Any serious damage that would come from bottoming out hard would negate the small protective benefit of a thin aluminum plate. If it were a quarter inch of steel riveted to the frame I might change my stance, but that would be heavy as a mother… If people had that bad a problem with their headers and pan getting raped by the streets, you would see a lot more people rocking custom heavy duty armor under their cars.
On a side not, I don’t think it would create a heating issue at all. No one is dumb enough to make a plate that covers the entire bottom of the engine and bay. Even then, no one would make a full cover without venting it. At least I hope not.
My vote? Far too impractical.
Solution? Avoid speed bumps, pot holes, and steep grades like everyone else.
lol believe me i avoid- my first integra leaked everything plus more- this one :knock on wood: is mint. I travel around the bronx, city, ect. where it honestly is impossible sometimes to avoid them- and believe me, i do hold up traffic going around them- but sometimes you’ll hit that occasional dip that oneday will get the best of my motor… and it would be nice not to make that cringe face everytime i do.
im thinking insted of a massive plate, making like a strip of thick steel or something that is strong but not so heavy, and making running it across from one side of the car to the other, (maybe like 5inches wide by whatever the bottom of the car is) just to take the blunt force of impact. basically when the car bottoms out- that would be the thing that would take a beating rather then anything else- theres no need for it to be too big- just big enough. - Doing this would also definatly not cause any overheating issues as stated, although i was planning on creating vents and an opening for my oil drain plug. -also maybe theres a way i can make it functional as well.
Some of you guys need to do some research before sounding ignorant. That link is to an diy undertray; which is used to eliminate turbulence and drag underneath the car. It going to do nothing in the way of a skidplate. At speeds there can be noticeable improvements through proper aerodynamic tuning of which an under tray is a part of. there are a few individuals on here who have built functional skid plates, but besides what was mentioned there is nothing you can buy off the shelf. I have a few ideas in mind, but nothing I am going to mess with right now. Plus, I never really have a problem bottoming out.
if you are going over things fast enough and coming up off the ground high enough to punch a hole in your oil pan, raise your car up to stock height and never lower it again. you should not have to worry about that, b/c if you lower your car, you should be driving in such a way that you are aware of hazards taht could severely damage your oil pan. I’ve only ever seen it happen to one of my customers, and he was an idiot who was street racing in an area where there was some construction and went over a pothole at 90.
Sometimes you are unable to avoid things, it happens.
I’ve been thinking of making a skid plate for mine next year. All the skid plates on the market are for the JDM ITR header. What about people with other headers? Or stock headers? Or turbos? etc.
from what i’ve seen most turbo downpipes are tucked up pretty nicely. and lots of guys make their own to avoid clearance issues. far as the stock manifold, it’s cast iron, bottom it out to your hearts content. that password one will work on a lot of different headers. its a more open design so you can just clamp it down whereever you wish. the only ones i nkow for sure it doest work on are the hytech, smsp, and the replicas.
You should just go to any good fab shop and have them make it for you. As others stated you can get the ones that fit the ITR header but if you’re running another header or want more protection you’ll need something 100% custom.
Any shop that works on off road vehicles will probably be your best bet, especially if they do work on Rally cars (opposed to 4x4’s, sandrails…etc). That first link posted is purely aero, that’s not going to protect anything.
If you can come up with your own basic design that would be good, or at least point them in the right direction of what you want and how you want it mounted and if you want to be able to remove it by simply removing a couple bolts. They can make you something as extensive or simple as you want. Just note you’re going to be losing a ground clearance by putting something like this on. So you’ll be bottoming out more often although hopefully doing less damage.
Hey Chris, I have an idea… why don’t you raise the car up an inch? Don’t you have coilovers? I’d honestly save myself the money and maybe make my car look a little less fly than keep bottoming out and having a special skid plate made.
fit is awesome- its actually alot of work though. All my first homework assignments were like my finals at RCC but im getting used to it now.
how bout your school?
