Way to tell LS YS1 and short geared YS1

Is their any way to tell by looking at the tranny itself to see if its the long geared ys1(LS) or short geared YS1(sock gs-r). thanks

i believe in 5 th gear at 80mph a short geared tranny will rev around 4500,and a long geared (LS) will do about 3800 rpm

If it’s not installed in a driveable car? I don’t think so. I was coached over the phone by a well known member here (if he sees this I’m sure he’ll chime in) on how to disassemble the trans and count the teeth on the ring gear I believe. It’s been a few years, so I might be forgeting.

^^
yea, it’d be nice to know what the ring gear tooth count is on the gsr. i’ve searched for a while with no results.

i’m about to crack open what i was told was a gsr ys1, and as far as i’m concerned, a gear teeth count is the only way to figure out what it is.

driving the tranny to figure out which one it is isn’t an option for me. i’m not going to build up a tranny, or even start buying parts for one before i know what the hell it is first.
