Weight Reduction

I am planning to rip anything out of my interior that will reduce the weight and still not make my interior look hidious. If you guys can post anything that i can rip out that is not eccential for the car and will not degrade what it looks like that would be awesome. if already started with all the seats and Im fabricating a carbon fiber floor cover for the trunk area (which is alot bigger now since there is no back seat !). Im also looking around to see if there is any other stuff on the exterior i can rip off. gonna take out the ac and im thinking about power steering unit (i like my power steering though). throw me some ideas of what i can rip out.

All the sound deadening. Some dry ice and a day worth of time and you’ll lose 40-50 pounds if you get it all.

i removed all a/c…power steering…and heater components…if you have a sunroof get the carbon fiber insert…remove rear seat seatbelts…rear wiper…i removed the seatbelt computer cause i have bucket seats…removed any wires from the harness not being use…took the vent tunnels out from under the dash…when the dash is off you can remove the foamy thing on ther firewall its pretty heavy and foamy IMO this is worth removing just as it is to remove sound deadening… get lots of carbon fiber parts…and FAL windows…

I don’t remember it weighing that much when we removed it from our race car. From what I remember it was a lot less than we were expecting. Still worth it if you’re going all out, but it can be a lot of work.

Go run and lose some weight. That would actually help your car out too.

As for “getting lots of carbon fiber parts…” The last time I checked the average carbon fiber hood was like 10lbs lighter than a stock hood…And some were actually heavier. It was enough to turn me right off of them cuz that is just not cost effective. If I am wrong about the hoods someone will correct me but I remember reading that when I was researching it a while back…

The single biggest difference I believe is the glass. Ever try to lift your rear hatch without those shocks in place? Hooooollllyy crap is that thing heavy.

Removing AC, ABS, Power steering, power doors, sunroof and interior will help a lot too. JDM 1 piece headlights are lighter than CDN/US OEM too.

Another member DB1-R82 has his integra down to about 2000lbs and that’s with a cage. You can even go as far as to cuz part of metal out of the body and frame that arent needed if you know what you are doing.

Some people are obsessed about weight, I’ve known a few and once they start they just cant stop.

Then there is the difference between “sprung” and “unsprung” weight. Removing 1 lb of unsprung weight is equal to removing aproximately 10lbs of sprung weight so there is that to consider as well.

right on guys, this is a huge help. I was looking into differant glass, but someone told me that in colorado it is not street legal. is there really a way that I can get busted by the cops on that one? or is it just not that visually noticable?

You’re correct about the carbon fiber parts. Most of these are made for looks and strength now, not to be lightweight. And many aren’t even full carbon fiber, but fiberglass or another composite with a topsheet of CF.

Power door parts don’t weigh much, a friend of mine got all of the parts to install manual window mechanisms in his GSR, after pulling all of his power window pieces and weighing them side by side he figured it wasn’t worth the hassle. I don’t remember the exact difference but I’m pretty sure it was ounces and not even a full pound. But obviously if you’re really getting detailed then even less than a pound makes a difference. I’m not sure about the power locks but I can’t imagine the actuators for that weighing much at all.

Good to know about the doors…I like my power locks and windows.

As for Carbon fiber…Paying 5 or 600 dollars for a cool looking almost black hood is just not in my budget yet. If, on the other hand it was 100lbs lighter than stock I would be more inclined to go for it.

now will lightening my car make it so the tires cant grip the ground? Ive heard stories of people lightening their car so much that they actually lose speed because the tires have more power then grip because nothing really pushes them down to the ground. is this true, im pretty sure this is just a myth, but maybe someone can explain. im sure i sound like a total dumbass right now, but i like to look outside of the box at everything.

Do you go to PPCC Rampart? Haha another Springs guy!

no i dont go to college at all. I do live in colorado springs, where do you live?

Not something you need to worry about.

right on,i just wanted to kinda make sure.i didnt think it was going to be a big deal.

i know they make a carbon fiber hatch and someone told me it was a big difference in weight compared to the oem. also u can get plexi glass shaped for ur rear windows n hatch theres a boat load of weight. not sure if its cost is more than u want to spend or anyone for that matter

The CF hatch isn’t a hug weight savings, the metal hatch really doesn’t weigh that much. The FAL glass replacement is really where the hatch weight savings comes in. There are a couple threads you can search for and I’m pretty sure weights are posted.

True. After you remove the rear wiper mechanism and the plastic underneath it (which is pretty heavy also) you’ll notice its pretty LIGHT.

try getting a smaller fuel tank

Are you talking about the plastic trim “cowl” piece that covers the wiper arm? That weighs about half a pound.

Again, the only real weight reduction is in replacing the stock hatch glass with FAL.

I’m talking about the trim that covers the whole hatch area including the little piece that coves the wiper motor.
