i have a '93 GSR, and when i bought it, the b17 was bogging really bad. i never really looked into it or even had time to. couple of months later i spun a rod bearing hitting up turns (apparently i was low on oil ). well i went ahead and slapped a jdm b16 i had into it and it had the same bogging problem.
well i checked base timing and it was fine. but it would still bog from idle all the way up to vtec cross-over like the b17 did. i was at the strip a couple of weeks ago and started messing around w/ the §§§§§ between runs. well it got to the point where the §§§§§ was all the way advanced and it actually had power in the low end and i could launch a hell of alot better.
my friend has a DA w/ a jdm b16 also. i drove it and it didnt really have any low-end either. i did the same adjustment and it had the same results.
i dont really understand what the reason for this is…
someone w/ a b16 try it and let me know what happens…
first off…advancing timing is a really bad idea especially to the max…next, vtec motors do not have much torque which is why it feels so weak in the bottom end…ITS CUZ IT IS!!! If you drive an ls you’ll feel the low end difference and the weaker top-end. to get the best of both worlds, build an ls/vtec
1st off…im not new to vtec motors or honda/acuras for that matter. this isnt my only car, i have a 4g hatch that ive had several single cam, LS, and lsvtec setups (that i’ve built & only one in which ive had anything go wrong w/) in and i also have a crx that is single cam boost. i do all my own work (including body) and none of my cars have EVER been in a shop.
2nd, having the timing advanced that much off of base timing, isnt bad. it runs awesome now and it gives me that much more over the other bogging b16s. you should be more specific when you say vtec motors dont have torque, the b16a/b are pretty much the only ones. you should go drive a car w/ a gsr or itr swap, they get off the line quite well.
so for future reference make sure you know what the person your trying to give your “advice” to knows before you treat them like a noob.

in relative terms, no honda motor makes any kind of torque…a gsr makes dick for TQ, and so does a JDM k20…but alot of people miss the point. the motors arent designed for low end grunt…high rpm peak HP is waht the motors were built for. alot of you argue over 5-10 ft lbs of tq when comparing motors…come on
