weird bolt fell off my car?

Was just driving to a friends house and am not sure if this bolt fell off my car or was road debris. Judging by the freshness of the grease and the manner in which it all happened I think it indeed fell off the car.

Anyways the bolt is about 3-4 inches long and has a square head. Not sure if it was off the engine or suspension or what… it has black grease all over it and definitely looks like it backed itself out of where it should be seated.

I’m hoping to be able to I’d where it goes before I have to take it to a mechanic and spend hundreds of dollars…

Uhh… post a picture of it? Would help a ton.

The one bolt with a square head that comes to mind is the bolt that the alternator pivots on. I would check there.

Here’s pics

Think the alternator pivot bolt might be it… not sure as I do not have a floor jack and it is dark out. Seems my old prelude had a square bolt like this…

You should definitely check your alternator. That is the pivot joint bolt. You don’t want to get stranded because your battery dies.

Don’t need a floorjack to look for it… look from the top, with a flashlight if necessary. Or use your hand and feel for it.

But as the others say, looks like the alt bolt.

Same exact thing happened to me. Alternator bolt, need a new nut.

yeah I can already tell once you said square head, mine fell off while pulling and shifting to third. next day my belt was making noise.

totally appreciate the help… I knew it looked familiar I just couldn’t place it… My 1st gen Prelude had the same bolt, and I was having a total brain fart over it LOL

Yup its from the alternator. Its the bolt that is located under the alternator.

was that exact bolt too the top bolt was still in place. with a little jiggling and a pry barit got popped back in…

Pretty sure it was the completely messed up street in SF that jarred it loose…
