Weird coolant leak on my B18C1

I have a coolant leak between the #3 and #4 exhaust ports, just under where the header bolts to the head. The coolant only shows up there and dribbles down the block just to the left of the oil dipstick tube. Everything else is dry, no leaks on the backside or on either side of the engine. Any ideas?

hmm gasket? so its leaking right under the bolts Jason or at the bolts themselves?? pics? unless the head is cracked there some how… i hope not… please update us.

jason, does your water neck have a gasket or is honda bond used? might wanna check up on that…cuz billy told me i dont need a waterneck gasket, he will use honda bond, there may be weak stream of the bond on the neck of your car is that was the case, let me know

Head shouldn’t be cracked - Portflow does a press. test on the head before they do any work if I remember correctly? It’s actually coming from under the header flange (if that’s the correct term) that bolts to the head. It’s under there right between cyl. #3 and #4, and dribbles down to the left of the dipstick tube. I’ll get some pictures in the morning, I just got home and with the engine hot the coolant evaporates. This morning before driving I noticed coolant toward the top of the “tab” that sticks out from the ex. manifold gasket - now how did coolant get up there?!?

Wade, I just used a Hondabond seal, but I checked everywhere around the head and that’s the only spot that’s leaking.

Jason,

Could it coming from the large coolant drain plug on the block right under the header? If you had the machine shop hottank the block they probably didn’t tighten that bolt enough when they put it back on. HTHs.

BTW, not sure if you got my email but your TB and wires are on the way. Thanks again.

pics jason? get it solved?

Don’t have any pics yet, it’s too dark in the morning to get a clear shot. I’ll have to wait til Saturday when I don’t work and there’s better lighting. I’ll post them up first thing Sat.

Pics

Okay, here are a couple pictures I just took. Of course it would have to be dry the one time I want proof, but the trail it follows is visible by that black “line” that goes down the block.

The line is directly under that manifold bolt:

It originates under the header flange, right now its a little damp under there but not enough to trickle down yet.

Anybody have an idea??

Jason… so its coming from the bolt?? looks like gasket… lol i knowu don’t wanna take the header off … but, unless there’s a crack there on the head where the bolt is… i can’t think of anything… and its coolant for sure? or maybe just condensation somehow from the headers after they have cooled??

It’s actually underneath the header flange, I just used the bolt as a reference point where the trail of the leak follows. I finally looked up from underneath yesterday and it looks like the headgasket is actually leaking. So as it stands I’m gonna start tearing it apart (again!) the weekend of the 19th.:frowning:

Jason, out of curiousity - what head studs are you using?

Thanks in advance.
