I have a dilemna. Ive got a 91 ls hatchback with 165,000 miles on it. I’m getting new shocks/struts and springs etc, but dont know what to do with the engine. I already have intake and exhaust, but do not know whether to drop an engine in or buy new internals. I only have about a $1000 budget, but I want to make my car faster. Which one will I get more bang for my buck?
$1000 is pretty much going to get you no where.
-too little for b16a swap (which is the cheapest vtec swap)
-almost enough for a b20 (depends on if you have to pay shipping, and what maintenance mods you want to do…as well as how smoothly the swap goes…i.e. no broken parts. oh, and thats if you do the labor yourself)
-too little for a rebuild
Personally i would keep the money in the bank and continue saving up for either a rebuild, a swap, or a buildup of a different motor. However if you don’t really want to go that far and you just want a little stronger of a motor i’d either swap in a b20 (if you can afford it) or just get some more parts for the b18a (maybe a clutch and flywhee? maybe cams and valvetrain?)

You should analyze the following to better help make the right decision:
-
What are my driving conditions?
-
What are my driving habits?
-
Is Reliability the primary concern for me?
-
What is my TOTAL budget?
-
Am I taking the car to the track, strip, or both? AND how often?
-
Have I fully utilized my current engine setup’s potential?
