What Happens If Not Enuff Hardener To Bondo??

tryin to fix up my teggy’s rear end
and when it came time to mix a bit of bondo to smoothen it out, i noticed i hadn’t much hardener left, so i squeezed what i could out of it, then spread the bondo on

now i noticed its taking FOREVER to harend
from like 3-4 pm to 9:30 right now and its still a bit soft
thats given the fact that it rained all day and my garage is closed so its a bit moist in the air.

if in the end i didn’t put enuff hardener in, what do i do? what happens? does it jst take longer to harder or do i gotta get it all off and then redo it?

Usually if u dont add enough hardener then it will not fully harden…before u start over, (Im assuming ur bondoing ur rear plastic bumper here) aim a hot lamp at it and see if it hardens at all, if not then Im afraid u gotta scrape out and start over with a new mix. I remember when I bondoed a hole in my rear bumper and it hardened in 20 minutes.

yep… it’ll be soft for a while… i used to be into lowrider bikes… and i bondo’ed my frame. yea… like what the buddha said… take a hot lamp to it first…

wut i was taught was to put da bondo on da plexiglass or cardboard. should be in the shape of a circle or sumthing like so. Then you put a line of hardener across the radius of the circle and that should be just enough. Try that thats how i always did it .

Apply lots of heat to it (but watch not to burn it), it should generally cure with enough heat added to it. The hardener contains a chemical that reacts with a chemical added to the base resin to produce heat. Polyester resins like bondo generally just cure with heat, so if you apply enough heat you should be able to get it to pretty much cure without hardener.

unfortuneately i have no heat lamp, and after letting it sit over nite, it was still a bit on the soft side, so i scrapped it all off (which was quite easy, shows how soft it was lol) and reapplied a new layer :smiley:

Did the new layer work? Sometimes bondo to Urethane is hard to do… Did you prep it well. What happened that you had to bondo ?

i just didn’t add enuff hardener to the mixture b4.

i needed bondo cuz i had a friend do a quick rust fix on my trunk w/ a new piece of sheet metal for the bottom left corner, but he did a half ass job on blendin everythang so i need to redo it, the metl work was ok but the rest he was sucked lol

so right now all is well, just gotta feather it into the rest of the trunk a bit more and use some spot putty :smiley:
