Like the title states this may be a really stupid question but what is the metal canister that mounts to the intake mounting bracket next to the oil filter close to the transmission on my b18a1, and what is it’s purpose?
i think your talking about the charcoal canister. if so, its just an emissions thing
post a picture…
I think he might be talking about the abs module
ah… see my car doesnt have abs so i wouldnt know. the only thing i can think of that is down there that would fit the description is the charcoal canister…
The charcoal canister is plastic, not metal. Possibly he’s talking about the rectangular metal box bolted to the back of the block, under the intake manifold. Which would be the crankcase breather box.
You can see a glimpse of it in this pic.

colin and fcm yes that is what I am talking about, if I thread the hole or put a big self tapping pipe plug with a couple fittings on the end in the hole will it be ok or do I need to have it there?
Oops, I was thinking fuel filter lol
What are you trying to do?
Plug/delete the hole? Or install a catch can? Or…?
basically plug the hole and do a catch can

There is that method… If you’re NA you really don’t need two vents though.
Some people use the bottom holes as drain-back, with the ‘vent’ lines of the catch can mounted on the valve cover…
But if you want to just plug it, Dorman makes a freeze plug that you can install and seal it.
When my motor was built, the builder used this freezeplug and a very strong “jb weld” type of substance to seal it. The intention is/was to run s -10AN fitting on the valve cover to a can.

Give that a read as well. Gives you an idea about the size/method.
Can the breather box be removed without removing the intake bracket?
From my recollection, No. you need to remove the support bracket to remove the breather box.
OP. Check out B&R adapter fitting if your looking to hook up a catch can.

this is what im running for my drain back/block port. works like a charm:up:
the plug for the pcv valve was broken and I had to take it out to repair it and YES, that PITA bracket had to come out. The bracket actually bolts to the back of the canister. I was sure hoping that fixing this and replacing all the hoses would help with my erratic idle- on to the next idea.
