What the HELL is THIS!?

I can’t figure this out and my google-fu is failing me. Please tell me what this is and what it does!

I took the THING apart. Tried to follow the single attached wire but it merges with a large wire harness under the steering column, and it is actually 2 wires under the wire sheath split into coils in this plastic housing. Baffling.

IDK what that would be… but at best guess is a magnetic sensor of some sort.

Actually, it may be part of the alarm system… I believe there is an interior alarm trigger which could be this little deal.

again I am not 100%, but judging by where it is tucked away… I’d say alarm system component, and judging by there being a power and ground hooked up to a copper coil, it is basically a electromagnet, which can be used as a sensor I.E. pass another magnetic field over it and it sends a signal to a computer.

OFC I could be completely wrong here too, but my electro-mechanical backgroud tells me at best guess it has something to do with what I said above.

Good luck with it

Interesting, I wonder if that’s what it was used for. It was mounted with both double-sided tape and adhesive glue so I’m assuming it didn’t come from the factory like that. I am the second owner of the car and it doesn’t have a factory alarm system nor did I encounter an aftermarket one when I installed aftermarket keyless entry. Its pretty strange that this thing would be in here considering that everything else about the car was stock. Some day if I ever redo my wiring harnesses I’ll have to see exactly where the wire goes. Thanks for the reply.

Then I only have one other idea… ALIENS!!!

Great, was gonna do suede, but now I’ll have to reupholster the roof-skin with aluminum foil to keep them from messing with my brain! haha!

big brother is tracking your car… muahahaha

It is the pick-up for an aftermarket “key fob” immobilizer, [starter kill] you need to pass the fob over that area it is picked up by the coil disabeling the immobilizer fo about 30sec.

If you do not have the fob and the car starts, the immobilizer has been bypassed. 94

Thanks for the insight fcm!
