WHat to do with new to me used head before install?

Searched…didnt find much.

So I grabbed a b18b1 head for cheap a couple weeks ago. What all should I do to it before install? Adjust valves, and clean? What is the best way to clean with out having to fully disassemble the head?

Noob Q’s I know, but Ive never done engine internals…always had a good running teg LOL.

Send it to your local machine shop for planing and cleaning. Install a new headgasket.

You ‘could’ clean it yourself… but it also needs to have the surface checked to make sure its level.

Just take it to a machine shop and have it checked and, if needed, resurfaced. While its there just have it cleaned.

When you get it back you’ll still have to adjust the valves etc. And obviously, new headgasket, as already posted.

Local machine shop wants 120 for full clean and inspect…does that sound right? Could I clean the head with parts cleaner and throw a straight edge across the deck to check myself for level? And also I know everyone says oem only for head gaskets but I only need it to last a year while I build a b20 up so I should be fine with a full head kit from fel-pro right? intake gasket exh gasket valve stem seals etc… 100 bucks.

where are u going
a surface should only be ~40

and usally they clean it already haha

if u want i can give u a place to goto

felpro is good

120 is way too high

Since you might take it to a shop I recommend having new valve stem seals installed. Its not easy to do yourself but for a shop its easy with the right equipment.

Hells yeah tell me where to go!

lynn auto machine

If you get a full gasket set/and or headgasket set they should give you valve seals… if u ask them they might do it for little more, which is well worth it

That’s who told me 120 for clean and inspect/shave.

just tell them to shave it
they still clean it alittle
which is more than enough
