wheel bearing questions

I already did a search, found some information about it, but didn’t really answer questions that i still have. i know a bad wheel bearing makes a humming noise. my question is, is the humming noise constant regardless of car speed? i drove around the streets with both windows down and didn’t hear a humming noise. the only time i heard the humming noise was on the freeway goind around 80mph with the windows rolled up. which i’m not sure if its the wheel bearing or not, my passenger side cv axle needs to be replaced, so i’m not sure if the noise is coming from that. is jacking up the car and seeing if there is any freeplay on the wheel the only way to see if the bearings are bad? not only that but i can’t really tell where the humming is coming from. school starts on monday so i wanna get this fixed hopefully before school starts. help is greatly appreciated. again please don’t tell me to use the search function because i already did that and the information provided did not fully answer all my questions.

It could be your cv joint. Mine made that noise for the LONGEST time and come to find out I had a bad axel. After I replaced it noise was gone!

But to check your wheel bearing just jack it up and try to wiggle the wheel. If you feel any slop its probably a bad bearing. But if there is no slop I put my money on the cv joint. HTH
Oh and advice from others is alwasy good too:up:

yeah i’m gonna replace the cv axle first since i have to do that anyways and see if that gets rid of the noise. if not i’ll replace the wheel bearings.

bad bearings dont all make the same noise
i had a bad bearing once but it didnt hum it just went clunk ,clunk, clunk
and the faster i went the faster it would clunk
if you plan to do i yourself you will need a press
if you plan to bring it to a mechanic then he’ll be able to tell u if its the bearing

bad bearing is a nasty grinding sound.
although it may be pretty feint when it first starts. but one they’ve been bad for a bit there is no doubt whats wrong.

also, if you can find a stethoscope (i think thats it, the ear thing :D) stick it on the hub and give it a spin. u can hear it easy
