Hey Guys,
When you were advancing your timing, did the engine became more “alive” like it raised its idle or something? And when you retarded it, did it feel like it wanted to stall?
Thanks,
Oz

I advanced my timing as far as possible and now use 91 octane gas…idle remained the same; intake note got deeper and louder; motor pulls to redline easier; mpg went up slightly.

hey 90integrags, i have the same car as you, so you just adtiming as far as it would go? I also saw you changed to 92-93 cams, did it make anoticeable difference. What else hav you done to your car, looking for cheap upgreades to get more power.thanks in advance

yes.
I went for the cheap upgrades, too:
Pacesetter header: $110 - ugly but functional
Pacesetter cat-back: $125 - ugly but functional
'92-'93 cams: $50 - well worth the price
advanced timing: higher price at the pump - highly recommended
custom intake: $2 - motor sounds better
K&N drop-in air filter: $50 - no obvious difference
Mobil 1 5-30 synthetic oil: $20-$25 per oil change - highly recommended for engine life. 193500 miles and going strong!
Pacesetter is cheap power - they work but will rot out after 2-3 years. It’s more expensive, but I recommend you look into a custom stainless steel catback and a ceramic coated brand-name header if you’re going to have the car awhile.

Love your answer Max:ok: Straight and to the point
Thanks Scott. I did notice that my engine sounds a bit louder than normal. As for mileage, I’m not sure yet. My fuel level sensor is bad so I can’t tell from that. However, I’m using a PC software to log my mileage and hopefully that will answer my mileage questions.
Thanks,
Oz
When you guys say “advanced all the way” , What degree before TDC is that?? Cause mine is at 18 degrees and runs well. I guess i’m just wondering if it pings or anything at fully advanced?

Mine is set at 16deg., but please keep in mind that my car is a Mazda…not a Teg

Oz
I’ve tried several settings for the timing and “all the way” feels the best on the butt dyno. Sorry, I have no idea how many degrees that is. I’ve NEVER heard a knock or ping from the motor. When I do, that’s when I’ll back the timing off.
how do u advance it?
Mines advanced to 20degrees and it feels strong you can tell a difference on how it feels. Just make sure yuo use super or premium. To advance you loosen three bolts on the distrubitor turn it and have someone look on the opther side with a timing gun to check your progress.

I think he means thats a bit much for daily driving…
My idle changes. The more I advance it, the more it goes up. The more I retard it the more it goes down.
