Where do I put my CAT on this exhaust?

So it’s smog time and I have multiple exhaust leaks and no CAT so i’ve decided to just buy something temporary but I can’t figure this out for some reason. From what I know I would just slap the CAT at the end right before the downpipe correct? I’m so confused… I.E. Headers - downpipe - CAT - then install this system?

Exhaust 1 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/1990-1993-ACURA-INTEGRA-DA-PERFORMANCE-CATBACK-EXHAUST-SYSTEM-W-MUFFLER-/231004938571?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1992%7CModel%3AIntegra&hash=item35c8f7a14b&vxp=mtr

Or do I have to get something else like this where there are flanges on the end of the pipe right before the downpipe?

Exhaust 2 - http://www.ebay.com/itm/Acura-Integra-Coupe-90-93-T304-Stainless-Steel-Oval-Catback-Exhaust-System-/400590077411?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1992%7CModel%3AIntegra&hash=item5d45077de3&vxp=mtr

I’m so confused because I noticed the CAT has a 3 bolt on one end and a 2 bolt on the other which the only thing that makes sense is the the 2 bolt end would bolt up to the downpipe?

Catalytic Converter -http://www.ebay.com/itm/ACURA-INTEGRA-1992-1993-1994-1995-V4-1-8L-DIRECT-FIT-CATALYTIC-CONVERTER-/251380584412?pt=Motors_Car_Truck_Parts_Accessories&fits=Year%3A1992%7CModel%3AIntegra&hash=item3a87734fdc&vxp=mtr

Down pipe isn’t a good term to use, that’s more turbo terminology. Starting at the engine:

  1. exhaust manifold (aka header)
  2. catalytic converter
  3. cat back exhaust system

You need to buy a cat and a cat back exhaust. Bolt the cat to the exhaust (3 bolt flange) then bolt the exhaust to the header (2 bolt flange).

Oh okay, so I would need to buy Exhaust 2 because i can unbolt the test pipe and replace it with a CAT? Exhaust 1 seems to be welded correct?

How about you post pics of your exhaust

Both #1 and #2 have the same components… They have RESONATORS in the piping, which virtually every exhaust system will have. It helps with sound and volume of the exhaust.

You would still need a catalytic converter and the flanges(2-bolt and 3 bolt), as Colin pointed out.

And just to clarify on what Colin was saying…

This is the layout of the typical exhaust system… learn it, and the names of the components, to keep everyone on the same page so there is no confusion about which part is being discussed.

Black Circle = Header or exhaust manifold. Though the top-half is cut off, this is the part that bolts directly to your motor, then drops down under the car.

Brown Circle = Catalytic converter. Comes right after the header.

Yellow Circle = Mid-Pipe. This is, obviously, the middle pipe in the exhaust system. Notice the build in Resonator I mentioned? Virtually any street-legal exhaust system will have at least one Resonator.

Blue Circle = Tail Pipe/Axle Back/Muffler. The very end of the exhaust system…

Cat-Back = An exhaust system that goes FROM the Cat, to the back… basically, the Yellow and Blue circles combined.

Ohhhh I get it now… SMH it was so much more simple than I made it seem. Thanks!

The issue now that you’ll run into is, catalytic converter length.

Unless the exhaust system you get is a DIRECT OE replacement, the length may not be the same… meaning modification.

Since I replaced my exhaust AND header, I just ordered the cat/flanges/pipe and custom tailored it to fit. After taking measurements, of course.

It was ugly, even after high-temp paint… But it is functional (and actually beneficial to have the cat as far BACK as possible)

So take that information as you will… exhaust work can be a pain in the ass.

What is connected after the header collector flange? Do you have a test pipe or a hollow cat?.. Best bet is to disconnect it off from car, buy a cat, bring both cat and test pipe or what ever you took from car to an exhaust shop
N have them mock it the same length with flanges. Then go home and bolt it on. Simple. Worked for me

I have a brand new mid pipe if you need
