Where is the alternator ground?

Where is the white ground wire connected to from the alternator?I’m trying to upgrade my ground wire for the alternator and I’m having trouble finding where the white wire is connected to. I’m sure many have done this and would appreciate if you can point me in the right direction.

the white wire? it is def not a ground. it is the power wire that connects into the fuse box under the hood…the positive 12 volts that recharges the system and battery. plz do not ground this wire as it will short out the alt. there is no ground wire on the alt from the factory. it is grounded through the block and trans, so there is a valve cover ground and trans/starter ground. however, as all this said, you can add a ground wire to the alt by grounding it from the alt case…as in where it bolts to the alt bracket, to the frame…run your own wire…8 ga is plenty.

I have a 120 and up amp alternator so I can’t run 8 gauge. I thought the white wire was the one to be upgraded to 4 gauge? Is this not part of the big 3?

huh? your alt size doesnt matter bro. you can run a 20 gauge wire, your still already grounded through the valve cover and transmission. 8 gauge is plenty big. put whatever you want though, put some double 0 gauge…oh yea, 5lbs a foot, lol. and yes, you can upgrade the white wire to a 4 gauge if you wanna but you will have to either cut the wire harness to trace it back to the fuse box under the hood or, which is easier, just run a four gauge to the fuse box under the hood and you are all finished.

Thank you for your input! I might sound a little confusing because I’m just a little unsure. The directions say to upgrade the factory wire to 4 gauge becasue more amps will be put thru and 8 gauge will burn up. It makes sense because its the same concept as installing a bigger amp with thicker wire. The white wire is 8 gauge which I believe most people upgrade to 4 gauge so there lights stop dimming. I will have to check the fuse box and trace the wire. This wire will be the main focus as I already have a ground from the valve cover. Just need to make sure

You replace the big three cables with the same or bigger gauge cable your running to your audio system. So if your running 4 gauge for your audio, run 4 or 2 gauge for the big three. In the end you will have the engine ground, chassis ground, and the charging cable from the alt to the fuse box, putting a inline fuse would not be a bad idea either. Also the cable that goes from the fuse box to the battery should be upgraded as well. The alt is grounded by being bolted to the block.
Hope that helps. If not, check out this site.

Thank you! Quick question what size fuse should I use for a 130 amp alternator? I’m thinking of using a inline fuse but unsure of how to match the fuse size.

If the alt is 130 then that’s where you start. Maybe a 140 amp fuse just to have some wiggle room. Now remember, that inline fuse will be in the middle of your charging system, so if something isn’t charging that’s where you’ll
start. Good luck.

Can you post a pick of your 4 gauge wire going into the fuse box from the alternator? I was thinking doing an 8 gauge from the fuse box to the Alternator. Ive already done the other grounds.
