Whining Alternator(New)

Hey guys,

Normally a whining alternator means the thing is about to go out  but it’s a brand new one that I just put in and tested it and it’s charging to 14.4 V to the battery. Is there anyway a loose or tight belt could cause the whining? It sounds like it’s coming from the alternator at least and that’s the only thing I’ve changed in the engine compartment? Supercharger baby!!! Haha

make your belt tighter… its probably loose… that the possibly the main thing…

You can try to tighten your belt but just be careful because overtightening of the belt can cause the front pulley bearing to fail prematurly(?). Use your best judgement when tightening, you shouldn’t need to take a long prybar to get the right tension. If you reach down and feel the tension on the belt does it feel loose?

Well the alternator belt should have 3/8 to 1/2 inch of deflection, which is about where i am at, closer to the 3/8 inch. Who knows!!

thats plenty tight, maybe you should have it tested and see if it whines on a test bench, maybe you got a junk alternator out of the box

But it’s charging the battery at 14.4V, so maybe it will go out or just breaking in haha. It’s not to loud of a whine.
