white smoke and black residue.. am i running rich?

Hey guys…

I’ve noticed that i have a lot more smoke/steam coming from my exhaust than everyone else…and even after the car is off… i can see it still coming out… But there is also a black residue left on the tail pipe. Am I running rich? I know that those are symptoms of it. Anything else that it could be?

If i am running rich, what can i do to make my car run more lean… or not so rich… or how can i tell HOW rich im running to make sure its not too much. Thanks

i believe hondas all run a little rich, stock wise. if you do not go WOT often carbon deposit builds up and when you do WOT the carbon deposit all shoots out. Another example: i was on the freeway following a 98+ integra when he got on the gas i saw a puff of smoke. and my 94 teg puffs smoke everytime i floor it.

I believe white smoke is a sign of bad piston rings. Someone correct me if I’m wrong.

I THINK ITS WHITE SMOKE= GAS PROBLEM
BLACK SMOKE= OIL PROBLEM…I THINK

White smoke can also mean a coolant leak somewhere.

come to think of it…

come to think of it… the exhaust does smell like coolant… i noticed that… you are most likely right… Where can there be a coolant leak and what does this mean for my car? how much would it cost to get fixed… i hope its not a big prob… please help!

You may want to check out your headgasket…and of course check all your hoses to make sure there are no leaks.
