Why the extra Tach?

I’m all for upgrading the interior and everything, but what is up with the extra tach.

Most of our cars have manual trannies and usually have a tach to go with it. I’ve even seen automatics with tachs. My question is why the big, bulky tach with the shift light?

I have a friend who just put one in his car and I asked him why. His reply was it looks cool. Acceptable answer in my book, but before I go out and put one in my car because “it looks cool”, I would like to get various opinions and feedback on “The Xtra Tach”

  1. if your motor revs past 8k
  2. when racing you can set the shift light so soon as light hits shift without having to worry bout watching the rpm gauge
  3. LOOKS COOL depends on which 1 though

im sure there’s more reasons these are just couple.

I personally think they are pointless and do not look good.

If you have a stock rs/ls/gs cluster and you want a higher rpm tach because your engine now revs higher, then get a stock tach which reads higher (from an xsi or gsr). Still got a motor that revs higher than that? OK, then maybe an aftermarket tach is what you should get. Personally even then I’d probably just get a shift light and use it in conjunction w/ the stock tach (as long as your redline wasn’t way way higher than your tach reads).

If you are building a race car and want a full set of custom gauges, then that is perfectly acceptable. On full race cars often this is more practical than trying to use any of the stock bits and pieces since you may want many extra gauges, don’t care about the speedo, will probably be installing switches, are going to be cutting up the dash and panels anyway…

Question answered

Thank you for your replies. I am very satisfied and content with saying that I WILL NOT purchase the aftermarket tach. For me it would be pointless.

Well if you don’t take your DA to the track often and do not have a high rev motor then yes… it is useless…

The aftermarket tach helped me out alot when I used to take my DA to the track… it helped me win first place in the amatuer bracket racing… too bad it ain’t for money… I only got a dumbass lil trophy

i have my check engine light as a shift light. i can see it clear while looking at the road. got a stock gsr cluster so i have a higher redline. clean and functional

you should look at my cluster mod thread. i put one in there that reads up to 12k if needed, lol. with a probrammable shift light. all inside the stock cluster! haven’t finished yet, though!

2 tachs is kind of dumb imo.
I do like a shift light though, Rapter Performance makes some nice compact ones that I’m going to use with my cluster swap just so it will take me even longer to finish the damn thing lol.

how did you get your check engine light to do that? anyone know?

HONDATA!

(** There are other methods as well, but it is one of the features of running Hondata)

i have chrome. chipped p28 from xenocrome. i didnt even know it was like that til i hit redline and saw a light flash. i thought it was the oil light til i did it again and paid attention. i dont know how to do that mod but its there and i like:)

they are ugly, but dont forget those monster tachs are usually more accurate than stock ones by a few 100 rpm

If the only reasons you put a larger tach in is because it has a shift light, then why not just install a shift light in a very visible spot like the gauge cluster some people put on their windshield post. :werd:
