ok this isnt about 2nd gen tegs but i figured u guys would be able to help. my friend has a 95 GSR and his vtec wont engauge and his speedo also doesnt work. can someone tell me what to check and what i need to do to help him fix this…cause he said when it did work it was great but it just all of a sudden stopped…he says like one in the blue moon it will kick in but thats hardly ever. someone help a fellow teg owner out. thanks
No idea on the speedo, but he might be low on oil. VTEC wont engauge if the car is low on oil.
VTEC Relies on speed input from a VSS input sensor. If he isin’t getting anything on his speedo, VTEC won’t work. I have had that happen on my 92 GS-R, Speedo cable broke, so VTEC wouldn’t engage. Hope that helps.
ok those gen tegs dont work on a speedo cable…but ive talked to other people and they said that the speedo wouldnt have anything to do with vtec
if the VSS is bad or got disconneted, VTEC won’t engage… I’m pretty sure both problems came at the same time, right?
yeah i believe both happen at the same time…the thing is vtec was cutting out left and right when he first got the car and now it just wont come back on
I not sure if my VTEC is engaging cause this is my first vtec car.
My speedometer cable is broken. Would this cause it not to engage?

Try checking the speedo gear under the intake manifold and to the left it should have a 3 wire plug. check to see if that is hooked up. If so then unplug it and test the wires there will be an orange which is the vss output wire and then a black/yellow that should have 12v in the on position, And the other wire should be ground and it is usually black. You can also tell if its the speed sensor but checking your codes, youe check engine light should be on or will turn on after youhave been driving for a while it will tell you also what the problem is. And yes your vtec will not work unless it has a vss signal. And maybe even check to see if a fuse is blown but thats if you test the wires and there is no power to the black/yellow wire. I hope this helps you out.
