Window Scratches

OK so I just had my windows tinted yesterday. It looks good.
Noticed one weird thing though, on my drivers side window there are a whole bunch of really small vertical scratches on my window, mostly near the bottom front. At first I thought this was a problem with the tint, but upon closer inspection the scratches are on the outside!
I have no clue if the scratches were there before, I didn’t notice them, but they are definitely there now. :frowning:
I accidently rolled down my window a few inches (supposed to wait 3 days), could that have caused it? Makes no sense at all to me… I have a feeling it was there prior to tint, and the tint just made it more noticeable.
Is there any way to fix hairline scratches like that?
Has anyone experienced this before or have any idea what may have caused this?

I’ll try to take some pics after dinner, but they’re really small

Those are probably scratches from the sand they use here in winter. Cars get really dirty here in winter from all the sanding. That dirt clings to the windows and gets caught up in the window seal/trim along the bottom of the window on the outside. This usually results in the windows getting scratched. My driver’s window has a ton of scratches like you described. I pulled one from the junkyard once that’s in better shape, but still had scratches.

Good luck with the tint job - don’t get caught.

thanks rice, I guess i’ll just have to live with it. I knew it couldn’t be because of the tint, but it just seemed so strange that i never noticed it before. i guess the tint really brings it out.

It could be from the window adjuster inside the door. It pushes on the window to keep pressure on it to help keep it in place because of us not having an enclosed door.

there is a compound called “Jewelers Rouge” that should take out light scratches in the window. Ive never used it before but ive heard it works well on those light scuffs.

If you try it let us know how it goes.

^^

Thanks saint, I’ll see if I can pick some up.

here is a writeup some detailer wrote online.

If the scratches are light, it is possible to completely remove them using a product commonly used by jewelers. Using a polishing compound commonly referred to as jeweler’s rouge, is an inexpensive method to remove light scratches from glass, and they’re relatively easy to remove with the right tools.
If you own a porter cable or know someone with one then see if you can borrow it along with a lambs wool pad.
Begin attempting to remove scratches from glass by applying jeweler’s rouge to the lamb’s wool buffing pad. Polish the scratches between 1,200 and 1,400 RPM, and if they aren’t too deep, this should easily remove them. If you’re unable to remove deeper scratches, they should at least be considerably less apparent.

After buffing away the scratches on the glass, put on goggles or safety glasses and rubber work gloves, and mix together the water and ammonia. Wash the entire section of glass using a clean soft sponge, and finish by drying the glass with lint-free paper towels.

There’s a teg tip on how to dismantle the window guides and replace the rub pads that are causing the scratching which appeared soon after you thickened the window by applying a layer of tint.

The scratches were most likely always there. Frameless windows are more prone to scratching than windows with frames - especially on 13 yr-old glass. If you can feel the scratch with your fingernail then it is to deep to remove it. If you can not feel it, then you can buff it out as mentioned above.

theres also a few companies that do that…i lost a wiper a while back and i scratched my winshield pretty bad…i called a company that repairs chips in winshields and the bufffed it out for me…there were a few parts the couldnt get out so the cooked in some resin…let it cure and the buffet that out as if it were a chip…the window looks brand new

the company i used was called (Repare-Brise)www.repare-brise.net i dont kno if theres any out there near u but i kno theres a few here in quebec

the site is in french tho so i donno if it will help every1 lol

k heres a better site its the same company just in ontario so its english www.chipdoctors.com

I find whenever u bring somthing nice to your car it brings out everything not nice about your car. tint = scrtches rims=paint paint=moldings/trim and so on

Thanks for the replies.

I decided not to do anything, I’m just going to leave it. Because:
A: The scratches are hardly noticeable at all. Not worth my time to try and fix something so small, and risk screwing it up even more.
B: The scratches are too deep to buff out with any product listed here. They are easily deep enough to feel with a finger nail.

Thanks anyways!

The scratches are from your neighbor trying to slim jim the door to get into your DA to steal your porno stash. :read:

Hahaha, he didn’t try very hard. What would one do with porno in their car anyways? One should always keep both eyes on the road, and both hands on the wheel

Porno in the car is for those lonely lunches at work where you hate every single one of your damn co-workers! LOL :jerkoff:

I have those same starches on my driver side window… up front, bottom corner.
I bought the car this way. I’ve always wondered what caused them and figured it was something inside the door. I’m currently tint less but was concerned if the starches will affect the tint when I do decided to get tinted.
So Scott, how is that tint holding up in that corner?

Tint is holding up fine. Shouldn’t really be affected because the tint is on the inside and the scratches are on the outside (at least on my car).
I got the tint done at one of the most reputable shops in Calgary (Icon) and I am very pleased with it so far.

Thanks Scott, I’ll have to check mine to see if the starches are on the outside or inside.
