well on the way home tonite i was putting my driver side window up and it just stopped and now pushing the button does nothing, figured it would be the fuse but with my luck its not so simple and will be much more complicated im sure, any ideas?
It is probably the switch, it is a common problem on g2s or any older model car, the contacts in the switch get “carboned up”, [dirty], they can be taken apart and cleaned.
To test you will need a multimeter, or at least a test light, you must pull the switch assembly out so you have access to the wiring/plug, the power window switches in a g2 uses a “ground at rest” system, meaning both the wires going to the motors are grounded when switch is at rest, [not rocked forward or backward for up or down] when you rock the switch for up or down the switch will disconnect one of the grounds and supply that wire with 12V+, so check that the white/yellow wire has 12V+ on it, with ign. switch in the run position, fuse 20 - 20A, [hot in run] in under dash fuse box, then check the red/blue and red/yellow, both should show ground, then rock the switch for up the red/yellow should still show ground but the red/blue should show 12V+, if they do not, unplug the switch, and with “jumper” wires connect the red/yellow to ground, and supply 12V+ to the red/blue, the 12V+ you can get from the white/yellow, if ign. is in run, the ground you can get from the black ground lead going into the plug, however there are 6 black leads, only 2 of them are chassis grounds the other 4 are for the pass. front window and pass. rear window, [4 door] on a 2 door there are 4 black wires two are chassis grounds, in both cases one of the grounds is for the drivers window and auto down control unit and the other is for the pass. on/off main switch.
Anyhow if you use the jumpers and window rolls up the problem is the switch, and you can try and clean it or replace it.
You can also try tapping repeatedly real fast and hard on the switch, [up] to see if you can get a contact again, if you do get it to go up, it will confirm that it is the switch that is the problem, however if it does not go up you will still have to pull the switch and confirm that you have 12V+ and a ground going to the switch, and the problem is not someplace else, [wiring].94
happened exactly to my brother’s 93 civic… after all the testing with the multimeter according to the schematics, it turned out it was the carbon buildup inside the switch…
it would roll down, but not back up…
i went out yesterday to fix it and it works fine again, didnt even touch it… kind of nice but still weird lol
Well if it is the switch, then it will just get worse, not a biggie, as I said you can sometimes get them working just by “tapping” the switch repeatedly, lets just hope it doesn’t quit when it’s down just as you leave on that 100mi trip, this fall/winter, driving west, wind from the south, rain/sleet storm, at night, 30mi till next gas station, both ways.:uhoh:
Naaa! that couldn’t happen, not in a million years.94
this just happened to me on my passenger rear window…i noticed that it was going down “wobbly” (<–is that a word?) anyways, I always had to help the window for it to go up, and just now as i was cleaning the interior, it went down normally, but it doesnt want to go back up, i noticed that it easily comes off the “rail” and now its pretty much stuck…anybody had the same problem? i got a feeling that something bad is going to happen (maybe break since all the pressure againt the metal…its comepletly loose and out othe rail)
Remove door panel, carefully remove vapor barrier, remount window to regulator, make sure “tracks” are mounted properly, look for loose or missing bolts, [holding regulator and track in place, look for broken brackets, [at lower end of tracks] 94
yep just did that, hmm i found a cracked piece at the bottom inside the panel, it was black in color and looks like a plasti nut and washer? dont really know…anyways, thanks for the input, ill try anything…i guess patience is key here, and we all know how stressfull windows can be…
“Plastic” nuts and blots are often used to mount the glass window to the metal regulator, [no metal on glass].:idea:94
thanks :), when i removed the panel, i saw a shattered nut/washer, when i finally was going to attempt to fix it, teh broken part is supposed to be inside the rail(botton), where the window goes up and down. I knew it was something like this…i need the whole assembly, its really old and in bad shape…im trying to buy one from this guy in teh COMMERCE section…if anyone has one, let me know!! also thanks for your help fcm!
Window switch being funny
I tryed to put a driver’s side window switch in my 92 2 door. The switch will only roll the passenger side window in my car up and down. I pulled it right out of a 90-91 integra and both windows would roll down in the other car but not in mine. I am used to just rolling the window up and down by wire contact but I want a real switch. does anybody have any good ideas.
If you know the switch is good, and you know your window motor is good, then I would start looking at the wiring, you will need a multimeter or test light, do you have power and ground for drivers door window?
Power is the white/yellow lead at switch, fuse 7 - 20A, [hot when ign. is in run] in under dash fuse box, [pass. window switch power is blue/black, fuse 2 - 20A].
Grounds are black, caution there are 4 blacks, one is ground for drivers switch and one is ground for pass. switch, [it goes through main switch] the other 2 blacks are the connection from the drivers door pass. switch to the pass. door switch, [those 2 blacks will only show ground if drivers door switch assembly is plugged in and and main switch is on, you loose ground on them if main switch is off] we know the power and ground for the pass window are good, but you have a problem with power or ground for drivers window. 94
i just got my car back and now my passenger side window wont move i noticed for a few months prior it was going up and down slower than my driver window
and now it wont move at all neither switch will do anything do you think it is the switch or the motor?
i just got my car back and now my passenger side window wont move
Maybe you should start your own tread, it gets too confusing when people just jump in like that.:dunno:94
back to the window not rolling up… Same thing is happening to me does that mean I just just clean it and it’s fine or is the switch actually bad? Where can I find a good switch for cheap?
pick n pull… or… pull the switches out and clean the contacts
Super easy to try and clean the switches first. Take the sucker apart, clean all the contacts and see what happens.
On one of my switches, the contacts were so worn down that cleaning it made no difference, its pretty notciable when this is the case.
I didn’t do anything to mine and it just started working. I think if it happens again I’ll just clean it and see what happens.
