Wire tuck question...

I am currently doing a wire tuck in my 1990 GS.

I have seen in other threads that people have depinned the headlights and other plugs. My question is why is this necessary? Is it solely for the purpose of fitting the plugs through holes, or is their some important thing electrically that can happen if i cut the wires before depinning them when i go to extend them?

i cut mines to have the whole as small as possible, the sensor are like an inch big.

Ricecstacy

doyou have pic of your tuck done would like to see you can send to my email? greazemunkey73@yahoo.com an one other question saw you relays in the flywheel section what kind of clutch do you have ? (i dont know how to start a thread sorry)

Most people depin so they don’t have multiple solder joints.

Though if done right and heat shrinked a solder joint shouldn’t fail. It’s just one less thing to worry about.

Plus de-pinning wires doesn’t take that long… all you need is a small tip screwdriver or a lil pin. Takes the hassle of cutting and soldering away…

:werd: I just did it cause I didnt want to cut any wires

Soldering is a bitch. Even more of a bitch if you spend like 40 hrs total soldering things.
Thank god my cluster is done.

thanks guys, i have the passenger side all done and everything removed i just have to pull it through and re run the wires today or tomorrow, and then move on to the driversside.

I have all the passenger side done, and I am moving on to the driverside in like ten minutes, and sorry I do not have any pictures with it completely finished because I am not haha. I do have some pictures though that I will post of what I had done earlier in the week.

Thats just a mess of wires that were all unloomed and some were deleted. Before they went in through the firewall.

There goes the dash

And there is a close up of the seperated wires coming through the firewall. Like I said the passenger side is done, but the driverside is what I’m moving on to next.

I will post a thread skimming over it just to get a feel for what you guys think. But tucks have been covered in other threads, I will just give a little show and talk about some things I did differently.

so how tough is it really to do a wire tuck? about how long did it take you per side?? been wanting to do it just haven’t gotten to it yet.

and does the dash have to come out?? i don’t wanna go that far…then again i do have a nice black dash i’ve been wanting to install.

yeah i hear ya, i want to tuck mine but i’m really sick of taking dashes in and out, been parting out and swapping dashes in a bunch of cars lately its starting to get annoying and i can’t even get my bezel to come out i can’t figure out how the climate control speed knob comes off i figured it would just pop off but it might be glued on and i don’t want to break it.

If you dont want to pull the dash, this is probly not the mod for you. As far as Im concerned its pretty much manditory to pull it to do it correctly

As far as time is concerned. I have many hours in it, more than i chose to count and even more in lost hours of sleep hoping I didnt fuck it up, over all as long as you mind your p’s & q’s, take your time and keep very close track of what you are doing. it was not a hard job at all.

it should just slide off, if it dosnt. you might be right and it could be glued on

taking the dash out is cake work. couple of misc. pannels, glove box, guages, steering wheel unhook a couple of clips from the fuse box and 6 bolts.

once again, making sure you keep track of everything is key

I actually started mine yesterday. Im about 1/2 way done with the passanger side. Mind u i have only been doin this for about 3-4 hrs a day. So i think if you were to do it non stop youll be done in 3 days or less.
