Okay I know everyone says that taking out the backseat area and even gutting your trunk isn’t worth the time and I didn’t think so either but I just have no life and did it anyway. So yeah I broke out the scale today (a very expensive one) and started to weigh items out. Here is the list:
Back Seat:
60% Side = 10lbs
40% Side = 9lbs
Bottom Piece = 9lbs
Total = 28lbs!!
Spare Tire (Stock tiny one…not even a full size):
Total = 22lbs
Interior Pieces:
Privacy Cover = 5lbs
Back Interior Piece = 2lbs
Side Interior Piece (Left) = 5lbs
Side Interior Piece (Right) = 5lbs
Spare Tires Cover = 3lbs
Seat Belts (includes bolts and hardware from spare tires and jack)
Total = 10lbs
GRAND TOTAL = 80lbs !!!
Not too bad of a weight reduction I must say since the word going around is that it’s not worth it. I don’t like hauling people around so that doesn’t matter and I find my trunk to be a lot cleaner all the time when I have it gutted anyway. Looks great and I don’t notice a sound difference aside from the fact I can hear my camber correction kits squeeking away. All in all I am very happy.
I don’t believe in the 1/10th per 100 lbs. I think of it as a percentage: If you cut 100 lbs off a 2000 lb car, it’s going to accelerate 5% quicker throughout the quarter. If you cut 100 lbs off a 5000 lb car, I doubt it’s going to cut 1/10th of a sec. off its time. If you start with a 200 lb go-kart and cut half it’s weight, you better damn well believe it’s going to be a helluva lot faster! :read:
I have had mine gutted for few weeks now. I personally like the extra space. I plan on getting it all carpeted to my match my stock carpet and then just forgetting about it.
could any of u guys post some pics of ur gutted interior? i’m interested to see what it looks like, i like the gutted trunk, i think it looks really nice, letting the ‘true colors’ shine through…
Good work Nexy, but where am I supposed to ride at when Im sittin in the back now?? Well see if that weight diff means ne thing when I get my Geeser and put a hurtin on. Theennn ull get ur turbo and I wont race u
a gallon of fuel weighs 8 lbs maybe you could ride around just above E and put a buck in twice a day. the 1/10 per 100lbs is pretty close . i gutted my int. in my old prelude (86 si) b4 i ran 110lbs including system and ran a best, 16.8 and the next time i said f-it and just ran and the best i could muster was a 16.95. it was within a few weeks of each other so temp was close same track and even the same lane. i was skeptical till it proved me wrong.
Good to know. I was planning on removing my back seats, just so I could say I have a 2-seater, and so I wouldn’t have to drive people around all the time. Besides, my car is so much slower with passengers!
To keep them clean silly! Actually because I caught my elbow on the screw when I was removing the plastic and realized they are there for my protection, not the shock.
Hey turboteg… if I am looking correctly you n longer had your sound deadening material in the trunk. What did you use to get it off. I think the trunk could look so clean if i wouldn’t have those big slabs of material.
I chipped mine off with a screwdriver, then cleaned up the residue with goo gone. PITA. Try using dry ice to freeze it first, it should chip off cleaner. After you remove the stuff, the metal under it will be a different color than the rest. The color is painted over the sound deadener, not under it.
