Your thoughts on blown block

Well my buddy threw a rod out of cyllinder number three. Anyone suspect the pistons goin up and smacking a valve? The reason I ask is he just wants to scrap the whole damn thing and I keep tellin him that head may still be good. The engine is not at my house and my license is supended so I cannot jus go rip the head off. Just seein is anyone had any input.

When you say ‘threw a rod out of cylinder number3’ do you mean it threw a #3 rod bearing? Or that the actual rod came out of the engine block? If it was just a rod bearing than 99% sure the head is perfectly fine. If the rod actually came through the block you would definitely need to do some inspecting to make sure the head is ok… which is easy enough to have a machine shop do. A vacuum/leak test can be performed on each port with the head off the block. That would tell you whether or not a valve is slightly bent. I say keep it and chek out the head, should be able to reuse it imo.

Yes, i mean a hole in the block about the size of a hacky sack, and the cap went threw the windage tray into the pan. Im just trying to convince him to check it out before the whole thing is tossed it. Even if they did touch doesnt mean it bent anything.
