170k on motor; should I turbo it??

Ok, I know that the car has 170k on it, but I want a turbo. I dont want to :ghetto: rig the car and have it blow up on me… Should I put a turbo on the motor that I have now, or just wait and buy the b16 and turbo that…I really dont want alot of power because thats not want im after. No 30psi here just, about 7psi…I just need come options on what should I do…

i too am in the same boat. i dont want a lot of power, just like you said maybe 7-8psi and like maybe 200ish hp. i would say do a compression test and a leak down test. i am like you to in that i dont want to put a little money into the car, then it not be reliable or break down or snap a rod or something. i mean the car does have 170k. mine has 175k, does not burn oil, no smoke, seems strong. i don t know what to do either. sorry the only .02 cents i could give is to do the two tests first.

nah man youre cool…im glad someone else knows where im coming from. But were can I get all those test from?? Should I just go to the dealer or some other option…

grab a helms and you can do it yourself. compression test is really easy, i couldnt tell ya on the leakdown as i have never done a leak down

:giggle:
yeah dudez! b00st uR 15 y3ar o1d b18a1 up t0 1224353214123 psi it w0nt hav3 any pr0b1ems 3v3r!!!

No, seriously, you don’t even know what you’re getting yourself into/what kind of money you’ll have to spend to get your motor to run right. First of all, the 15 year old weak ass pistons in us 2nd gen teg owners’ b18 blocks won’t stand up to boost. You’ll have to replace your pistons, rings, and rods no matter what, and i would suggest knife-edging or balancing your crank, one or the other, or both. Then, to support the amount of air you’ll be cramming into the block, you’ll need more fuel, more fuel comes from bigger injectors. The popular ones seem to be dsm 450cc injectors, and you’ll need a fuel pressure regulator. After you’ve done all that, some would say to upgrade/replace your fuel pump. Other popular beleifs are that you need to get ARP head studs, sleeved block, block gaurds, etc. etc., but if you tune it right, you won’t need all that, or any of it for that fact. Speaking of tuning, you’ll need some kind of tuning solution such as turboedit, and a chipping kit (go to xenocron.com and read read read, then, when you think you’ve learned enough, you can order the chipping kit and try not to blow up your motor when making your own fuel/spark maps). Finally after you have all this installed, you might be able to go out and g-stomp a few mustang-gt. Oh, but this is only the beginning… :violin:

Oh YEAAAAHHHH :giggle: , go to the dealer. They’ll help you out nice’n’good.

If u want it reliable i suggest u go with forged internals thats if ur gonna up the boost later on.

But just replacing ur old pistons, rings ect is good enough for 10lbs of boost.

I say its all about tuning, if ur just gonna slap a turbo on it, make sure its tuned or it wont last more than a month. But every engine is different, alot of people are boosting on their stock blocks and are doing fine, just make sure its tuned properly.

if you put your turbo kit on first, then you’d have to uninstall it to swap in the b16 you said you wanted. that’s extra work. if you want to minimize the amount of work you have to do to the car, then get the swap done first. after everything is worked out with the swap, then you could build the turbo kit for the new motor. also, i must agree with everyone else that tuning would be a good investment toward getting the most out of your turbo kit.
