Well, I have been using a Boost gauge from Iequus ($30) for the past year. this one has been reading 20 vaccume on idle and when I step on the gas it goes to 0 like it should. Currently at full boost it reads 9 PSI.
Today I bought a Auto Meter Boost gauge ($60) this one reads 23 vaccume at idle. When I step on the gas it goes 5 points under the 0 mark and crawls up. At full boost it is reading 11.5 psi.
Now my question is which gauge is the lemon? It seems the iequus gauge is a bit more responsive. I have made sure there is no leaks at any of the connections as well. Seriously I dont know which one to believe…I don’t feel im running 11.5psi.
Im confused as hell…:stare:
NOTE I do have some exhaust leaks which are being fixed this weekend.
how are u regulating boost? internal or external wastegate? u should know just by how many psi ur suppose to be pushing :stare: i have seen new autometers fail so i wouldn’t be surprised and by the description it shouldn’t be ‘creeping’ up the gauge especially just up to 0. it could fail that bad it is reading more boost but than again. sure way is to datalog it if you have the equipment.
External WG, I have a manual boost controller as well. the problem is, the spring came with my WG ( I bought it used ) the guy said it was a 5-7 psi spring and I was only seeing about 5.5 PSI on the Iequus gauge, so im assuming Id be seeing 7.5 psi with the Auto Meter.
As for giving it gas with the auto meter gauge - it shoots to like 14-15 positive vaccume then raises to 0 at a quick rate, the Iequus gauge shoots up to 0 instantly.
My buddy said it should hit 0 instantly, but since I have exhaust leaks I was thinking maybe the auto meter is correct by knocking me off 5 vaccume.
ur exhaust wouldn’t have any effect on the gauge, its a map reading. oh the spring rate will not vary from 5-7psi. it sounds like the autometer gauge is bad.
Well here’s the verdict…Went back and my buddy grabbed a new Autometer gauge just to test quickly, It idled at 20 vac like my old gauge and hits 9 psi… So the guage was defective. I got my $60 back since there really isnt any point in spending that money on a new gauge since my old one works just fine.
Instead im probably trading for my buddies 92 bumper and getting my moldings all painted…after all the money I have put into the car I might as well make it look nice on the outside…
