3rd gear grinds on up and down shift, why?

whenever i shift into 3rd gearup or down, it makes a grinding noise, and only in 3rd gear, and above 3500 RPMs. anyone got any tips or do they know what this could be? thanks

sounds like your synchros are shot in that gear… 3rd gear is actually the most common gear to go in our tegs. unfortunately you may be looking at a small rebuild soon.

how’s your clutch? slipping at all?

nope not at all, it slides right into gear, but makes a grinding noise as it does :\

sounds like your 3rd gear sychro to me. like i said, very common in our tegs. you may have to pull your tranny soon and get it rebuilt… know anyone near you who could help you out? cause it might be pretty spendy at a normal shop

how much am i looking at for a rebulit? and also if it is the synchos how long will new ones solve the problem for?

me2

my 3rd gear grinds now even when I double clutch it. It used to not grind when I double clutch’d it but it is now and it’s bothering me. is this my prob? how much would it be to rebuild or fix this whatever. Should Ihave it fixed imediately before it gets worse?

thanks guys.

also,
I need help rewiring my fogs… it talks about two switches that pop out I assume those are not the battery connecters. I don’t know where the 5/6 wires are. help.

thanks

since you’re in forest grove, your best bet is to try and hook up with G2GURU, he lives out near sherwood. He can do the rebuild for you and give you a really good price compared to the dealership, etc… trust me he does good work, he’s pulled many trannies in his day. try and get a hold of him to see he can help you out.

jeremy, he and others can help you with the pricing. i’m sure there’s some cali members down there that can get you a good deal on the rebuild … but it’s lots of work.

mines grind too over a certian rpm, usually over 3000. so i dont go over 3000 when gettin in 3rd. no money to fix it now or even for parts.

Its the synchro/gear. you probably out to replace all of them while its apart if they show any wear. Mine needed all synchros and 3 and 4 gears. dont forget the bearings.

how much am i looking at without a hook up

i think i spent about $700-$800 on parts after 20% off. I did the labor myself.

oh lord

my car just had the whole tranny rebuilt ( except for the flywheel, they said it was in perfect condition so they just left it alone) at 107000 miles. Now at 113000 miles my 3rd gear is starting to grind when I shift. Could it be because of the flywheel? Or maybe I need to change my tranny oil? I’ve heard that helps in these situations.
Any help would be much appreciated.

I bought my car with 106k on it I think I have 110 on it now and 3rd gear is grinding, but I’m broke so I can’t worry too much about it

well if u do want that grind no more, you could skip 3rd gear all together, 2nd to 4th, i dont recommend this under slow driving lol, but doing 35 in 2nd gear and going to 4th i would like better then a grind :\

my 4th gear ain’t to pretty either :frowning:

700 to 800 wow. I didn’t think it was that much. My 3rd and 5th are nasty right now, specially 5th. I have to double clutch or catch but always grinds bad. And now my 1st is starting to give me problems, sometimes it just doesn’t want to catch… I’ll be at a stop light and sometimes I try to push it in 1st to take off and it just won’t catch. Well, if it’s really that expensive I guess I’ll just have to live with it. I also have 150k on my car right now.

yep…it sounds like the synchro is shot. If you haven’t had your tranny rebuilt…nows the time to do it since theyre going to charge you for the labor to drop the tranny anyway. In the meantime (just to spare you some time to save since this will cost you) you can get some Redline Tranny Fluid and this will hold you out a bit.

I forgot about how my first gear has not caught a few times too. makes me  to think what this will cost me. even more, how I have no money.

Yeah…its pretty pricey…mostly bcuz of the labor which is why I said you may as well rebuild the tranny since it has to come down. I had to replace 2 synchros in my GS-R and I rebuilt the tranny (at the Acura dealership) and it cost me arouns $1400. I thought that wasn’t bad considering it was the dealership
