So… i bought my car with the JDM headlights and I didn’t realize the JDM housing uses a different high/low beam bulb. So being the nub I am, I ordered me some 9004 HIDs (along with H3 HIDs)!! :idiot:
I figure it’s just a fitment kind of issue right? I haven’t opened anything up yet to take a peak, but i know what h4h bulbs look like and i know what 9004 bulbs look like. and given this information, couldn’t i just cut/dremel the JDM housing to make it fit?
And yes, i’ve searched around blah blah blah… but i haven’t found anything really particular to what i’m talking about. I’ve found H4 mods, 9006 mods, blah blah blah, but nothing particularly for 9004 HID bulbs fitting into the JDM housing. I know it won’t fit directly, but i am very capable of drilling/dremelling what i need to make it fit. thanks for the help!
PS
or… if anyone wants to buy some brand new in box 9004 HID with XenTec ballasts… lemme know… so i can go buy me some h4h HID… or do i just have to buy the bulbs? thanks again for the help
If I’m not mistaken… you can just buy the H4H HID bulb and plug it into your existing Xentec ballasts providing the connecting bulb harness is the same, if not you’re going to have to order the harness and bulb together. Then just sell the 9004 HID bulb… someone correct me if I’m wrong…
okay, so the local guy with the H4Hs flaked so i decided to stick i the 9004s…
man… what a piece of cake. The H4Hs are only held on by the metal piece anyway. It’s not like it slides and rotates like 9006s or whatever. So the metal piece holds it up against the housing anyway.
All I did was simply take out the H4Hs and stick the 9004s in the hole and it covers everything. Then I just simply put the metal piece back and it holds the 9004 bulb very nicely and firmly in place since it’s got rubber on the back side of the bulb. Then I put the rubber grommet over it and presto… it fits and i tried moving it around and even giggling and bouncing it violently like how my car would treat it and it’s very very firmly in there (as firm as the H4h bulb).
The only complaint is that the bulb sits in a slightly different position (obviously) than the h4h. Therefore, u get a different focus point. However, since HIDs aren’t really meant to reflect off of mirrors and there are no projectors anyway so the lights will have a rough scatter no matter what. Most of the beams are, however, pointed towards the ground since i adjusted the lights to point as downward as possible… (anyone have tips on this???). I figure the difference in focus points between the two bulbs is pretty minimal (small enough to render me not having to go through the hassle of returning the 9004s and getting H4H HID bulbs). Also, I’ll be taking a look at my friend’s CL with OEM HIDs and no projectors and make some comparisons. We’ll see how that goes. If it gets horribly annoying or i get a ticket for it, i will retrofit some projectors in… or… ebayy??? =x
I just put it in and it’s dark sooo… no pix but here are some pix of the install…
My work area…
H3 HIDs for fogs
XenTec HID Kit (3000k Fogs, 6000k Low beams… no more high beam for me)

making short work of the fogs first. I had no clue the wiring went through the entire housing out the other side…
What it looks like inside the fog area
Took out old H3 bulb.

Taking out the H4H bulbs are pretty self explanatory… then i just fitted the 9004s on… no cutting or dremmelling necessary…

One side done:
Time to go test:

It’s a little more blue than what i had hoped for but i kind of knew since i knew i was getting 6000k. But it’s a nice transition with the yellow fogs. The fogs actually look GREEN at initial start up but it warms up to yellow.
No more pix since i had my crap camera… can’t take good night pix so i won’t. Stay tuned g2ic.
I’ve got the same set up on my car but 4300K fogs.
Finally had some nice fog to test the lights in the other night, I didn’t even need my low beams on.
thas awesome man…how did u connect the harness did u just get a female 9004 harness to connect it to the ballast?? and also can u take a pic of the light output on the road to see how it projects the light…appreciate it thanks a lot
^^^ thanks, it projects pretty well… i’ll get some pix as soon as i can get a hand on my other camera. As far as connecting the wires, i just cut the original pig tail off the car end and soldered it to the wires going into the ballast. no biggie.
i’m bout to pick up a set of the one pieces as well… so all the info on this is great… so… whats the difference between H4 and H4H???.. if you have the proper H4H bulbs in the houseings does it scatter the light still? is there any way to avoid scatter? to just have one consentraited beam???
^^^ yea you will still have scatter…cuz the one pieces are not meant to have HIDs. If your want a nice beam with a cut off you will have to do a retrofit…meaning swap in projectors from a tsx or an s2k or something along that line…then you will have a perfect HID set up…and H4 is the USDM bulbs…whereas H4H are the JDM bulbs
is there any writeups with pictures on how to do the retrofit? sounds difficult but i want bright lights damnit! lol… where would i get like a retrofit kit at? thanks
I just tried this with a 9007 hid kit that I had lying around from my moms car…and it worked perfect…all u have to do in 9007 kit is that u have to trim the little plastic ring on the bulb and then it fits in snuggly… I couldnt get the metal clip that locks in the bulb to fit…so i just removed it for now till I figure out another solution…DXR did u have to modify that metal clip to fit around the bulb…cuz the 9007 bulbs back portion looks exactly like 9004…thanks for helping
^^^WERD! mine looks just like that!!! Got any pix of the light out put (on the other side) and where the light points and all that? I haven’t gotten around to doing taking pix w/mine… been having a bz weekend. But they will be up soon. I’m glad this information can help others. There is a DIY on here on how to install projectors but i guess it’s so old that the links are broken and the pix don’t work.
All that has been stated is true so far in this thread. You will get scatter no matter what. I even pointed my down as much as i could through the headlight adjustment, but it don’t do anything. Best thing to be able to get a nice beam with sweet cut off lines is to retrofit some projectors (or ebay those nastyy ghetto projector ones)
