93 RS Track/Auto X Build

Whazzzzaap G2IC! This thread will accumulate lots of dust during the progress of my build due to a very tight budget, so please bare with me!!

I recently was T boned by someone running a red light and my previous DA (90 RS) Was totaled. I was lucky enough to walk away without a scratch and to not have a passenger at the time. Long story short, I was able to salvage the fresh Hi Comp b20b that was swapped in shortly before the accident along with the front suspension, my HKS hi power exhaust and many other salvageable body parts and such.

Enough with the sad story, lets move on to what this thread is really about!!

After the accident I picked up a 93 RS for $700 and with the help an awesome friend of mine I was able to tow it down to my area! She has her flaws but this car will not be for show, I might have been able to find one in better condition but I am impatient and I couldn’t wait any longer to get another DA  The body is pretty straight, my main concern is some of the rust that it has. I dont know too much about auto body but I think i can save it! Here it is:

The following weekend with the car I stripped the interior and got rid of the stuff I wont need anymore! It so dirty!!

Continuing with the tear down. Here she is with the engine out:

The stock b18a1 was very leaky and it left its mark on almost everything in the engine bay and suspension. Luckily I can just scrap the suspension, its covered in dirt and grime. Lots of scrubbing to do…

Almost clean…

Alright, I have alot of cleaning to do and I wont dull the thread with details of what kind of cleaner im using, so lets move on to the goodies I have so far!

Picked up an 97 ITR transmission from a friend for an awesome price!

:excite:

Hasport Cable to Hydro assembly

On a side note, has anybody ever had any major problems with this hasport cable to hydro? ^^ Ive read that theyre a bit finicky but I got it for a good price. The person I purchased it from said that he was able to shift fast with no problems other than pedal adjustment. Anybody experience otherwise? If this dosent meet my standard im going to look at the Hush22 kit or just dump the guts of my R transmission into my old cable ys1 casing.

R shift linkage

N1 pulley. Thanks Carl!!

Innovative 75a mounts

B20b

I went ahead and cleaned and sprayed undercoat on the front driver side wheel well. I purchased the 3M brand and it seems like it worked very well!

Next I will be finishing the undercoat for the front and rebuilding my ef manual rack and try to get the rear cross member orrrr subframe, whatever its called, installed. Will update soon…

Seems like people love to hit our 90 rs’ man. Whats up with that right ? but is long as you walked away, thats the best part. New car is looking real nice so far

Yeah I don’t know what it is! I’m very lucky though. Thanks for the kind words!

Stoked to see another track build

Personally I really like the idea of sticking with the cable trans setup, but if I had to convert to hydro I’d go with the Hush kit and not even bother with anything else. Is your trans a 4.7 or 4.4? I’m assuming 4.4 which for you should be good since you’re going to be using a B20. A 4.7 may be too much for a non-vtec engine.

Good luck with the project and keep us posted!

Nice one more da race car out there, we should have a race car build section on the forum lol, keep the good work and updates

Thanks you guys!

Collin, it’s the 4.4. I’m interested to see how this hasport conversion will do. I’ve never had a hydro transmission so this is all new to me. If all else fails I will probably just do the hush conversion.

Got out in the garage for a bit today since the weather was nice. I finished cleaning up the bay and the core support and grinded the passenger side wheel well for some undercoat. Trying to get all of the cleaning done while I collect funds for the ef rack. Here is how shes sitting now:

Passenger side wheel well almost all cleaned up.

Here is the aftermath and my lovely double knot. After I cleaned up for the day I found much more…

All done  I said eff the brake line, I ended up cracking the hard line when trying to undo the 10mm bolt. That thing was rusted on there real nice!

Nice to see the another da being used as a track car. From personal experience hasport cable to hydro kit didn’t feel smooth, so I ended up converting the car to hydro. (custom kit like hush22)

Thanks! I’m debating on either getting the innovative conversion or just going full hydro. The innovative one seems like it has a much better design compared to the hasport conversion. I’m wanting to keep costs down as much as I can untill I get the car on the ground and start feeling everything out.

Looks good man, I also got a red one although I’m still on my first. Let us know what you think about the hasport kit when it goes in, thats probably what I’m gonna get.

Thanks! There’s something about a red DA that’s just awesome. I’ll keep this updated!

I have the hasport actuator up for grabs if you want it

Cleaned and painted the R transmission last week.

And then dropped it into a box and had it all fall into pieces…

Kidding, shortly after I painted the transmission I had a quick change of heart. Instead of rebuilding my steering rack, I had someone put the gear set of my ITR transmission into my old cable YS1 transmission case. I personally think staying with a cable transmission is a great idea, that means I dont have to mess with any of those quirky conversion arms  Here is a pic of the YS1 with the R guts:

Here is a couple pics of the internals of the R transmission going in to the cable casing:

ITR gear set in YS1

Im excited to see how this transmission performs, I dont have much experience with hydro transmissions so im glad im sticking with the cable setup. Thats all I have for now, next update should be the rack and pinion.

Looking good. Did you trim down the ribs inside the YS1?

Yes, I had someone do the work for me since I don’t know much about transmissions. The ribs had to be trimmed off where the diff sits if one wants to use the ITR LSD.

Time to brush some dust off this thread! Ive had to put the da on hold for a moment while acclimating to a new job, but I finally had some time to get a little bit further with it.

I finished getting the rack and pinion back together with ES bushings and using Moog inner and outer rod ends and I have to say that I am impressed with the quality of these parts. Didn’t get too many pics of the process but here is the end product:

Ive also cleaned and painted the front end suspension. I probably should have waited until I take the knuckles and LCA to the machine shop to press out the bushings and wheel bearings before I painted everything, but being anxious to see everything nice and clean i just did it anyways  Ive ordered 2 OEM wheel bearings, 2 Moog lower ball joints, ARP wheel studs, HardRace front camber kit and I have the LCA bushings from my ES kit. Im waiting until everything gets here to take the knuckles and arms to the machine shop, after that I should have everything with the front end squared away. Here is some progress:

Onto the interior of the car, I removed the dash and started to remove the all the HVAC stuff. Not looking forward to getting the sound deadening out of the front…

More to come…

I just tore the hvac/deadening mat out of mine. Kind of a pain, but worth it for me. Nice build so far.

Awesome work!! This looks like a lot of fun too.

Thanks guys!!
