949 6UL wheels (or other 15x8/9 wheels) for Autocross.

Anyone have a 949 setup?? I’m looking for a new autox setup and I’ve been wanting these wheels for awhile. My car is setup for the STC class and im about maxed out on mods. I’ve grown board of the restrictions in this class and I’m switching to SMF at some point soon. My current wheel/tire setup is 15x7 MB Competition wheels w/205 BFG Rivals. I used a reverse staggered setup for awhile with 15x7.5 wheels in front with 225’s but didn’t gain much, plus they were a pound heavier.

Now I’m looking to switch to a 949 15x8 wheel with 225 Rivals all the way around. The setup would be about 3.4 lbs lighter per corner and provide a larger contact patch than the 15x7.5 wheel did previously on the front.

Anyone have a setup like this? I’m wondering if the 225 tire on the 8" wheel would be the same or less efficient than a 205 on an 8" wheel due to the stretched side wall, or a 225 on a 9" wheel… just don’t think I could fit a 225 tire on a 9" wheel in the rear…

Thoughts and pictures welcome!

Bump! No 949 wheels out there??

I’m just debating on doing a 15x8 square, or staggered 15x9 on the front w/225 tire. I’m assuming I will need spacers for the front, which would then require studs and new lug nuts.

Bump!! No one has a 9" wheel fitted?

This info is for a 15x9 et36
Front should be fine but you’ll need spacers to clear the RTA. So same size spacers all around and it should fit in the stock fenders with a roll…and possibly some pull.

I don’t remember what i had measured though…you could use your current set to measure up for the spacers. Works out to something in the 20 to 25 offset range i think.

You can find 15x9 in that offset range…have a look at all the replica wheels out there.

I only want the 9" wheel up front as it won’t do much good on the rear during autox. Also I’d rather fit a 8" all around then go with a replica wheel with a more ideal offset, simply due to weight as most replicas weigh quite a bit more than the 9" 949 (12.4 lbs)

So spacers would be required up front for the 9" wheel with a +36 offset?

Pretty sure the 9 et36 fit upfront but don’t quote me as it’s been close to a year since I measured.

Bump! Autox season is starting again and im on this 9" wheel kick again. Im now looking at fitting a 15x9 +35 up front with a 225/45/15 tire. Im not worried about the fender as much as rubbing the inside and the knuckle. Im trying to avoid using spacers since i would need extended studs to be safe… but will if i need to

I cant find anyone with this setup on the DA. I did find this thread however.

The wheels im looking at are a +35 offset, so that may help based on the knuckle contact noted in the link above, but I was also curious if the DA has more clearance in this regard than the EF. Anyone know?? Any pics or experience with this setup is appreciated!

I’m test fitting one set of 15x9 et36 and one set of 15x10 et15 this weekend.

I’ll report back with results.

You’re my flippin’ hero :excite:

ARGH, could you please take some pics for reference!? Ive yet to see this setup on a DA.

…I ready to order wheels once i hear back. lol

15x9 et36 up front won’t work without a 5mm spacer. I can upload a pic of clearance with a total offset of 30 later this week.

DISCLAMER: My front hats are aluminum wilwood units and could differ by +or- 3mm compared to oem type iron discs.

Rears could run 36 if you shave some of the rta near the camber arm. If not then you’re looking at 8ish mm spacers.

Can’t comment on clearing body work…my wheel openings aren’t original.

Darn, that’s dissapointing. The 15x9s I’m looking at are a 35 offset, but that doesn’t seen to be enough to clear. What didn’t the wheels clear on your test? Suspension or the inside wheel well?

I’m not against spacers, but that means I need to buy spacers, extended lugs and open lug nuts… and I love my McGard lug nuts!! Just a few hundred more dollars I didn’t want to spend.

Look forward to pics and tire sizes fitted!

Thanks for your help ARGH

Clearance issue is the knuckle on the front end. I didn’t verify full lock since there aren’t any tires mounted. Plus I already know I don’t have much with brake ducting in the way.

Have you heard of Jongbloed Racing Wheels? They aren’t as light as 949 but come in E30 friendly offsets which seem to work perfectly on our cars.

I’ll be running 15x10 et15 with 245/40/15 front. 15x9 et36 with a 15mm spacer and 225/45/15 rear.

I have seen those wheels on a few websites but only found et36 wheels. Where have you found a +30 offset for sale?

My bad, they’re all 36 aside from the 10. I meant a total offset of 30 (wheel + spacer) Looks like you’ll have to use a spacer.

Blast! Guess ill need to figure out how to get some extended studs in there for spacers. I didnt want to have the wheel bearing pressed out but I guess theres no other option unless I wimp out and go with an 8" wheel. Booo!

Also, what tires are you going to be using on those 15x10’s? I’m assuming you have over-fenders?

I’m hoping to stick that 9" wheel up front with 225/45/15’s. Fenders are just rolled, might have to do some pulling as well I suppose.

Yea, maybe a little pull to fit the 9 up front. Using VW GTI flares at the rear. I cut the bottom part of front fender off(right around where the moulding should be) and pulled them outward so they poke out about an 1 1/2 inch compared the door. Tires will be Maxxis RC-1

Bump for ARGH pics of those test fits!!

Im on the verge of buying new parts for the extended lugs. I just wish tire rack would get in the new shipment of 225/45/15 street tires since theyre out of stock except the R1R. It would be easier to pull the trigger if the new tires were available. Sounds like it will be a few months before theyre available :bang:

I’m not sure if there’s a regular “season” that tires are released or re-stocked but I’ve run into this problem of not being able to find tires in stock around the beginning of the year for the past 2-3yrs. And for some reason I’m thinking maybe around March is when new models start coming out and people start testing out the new compounds and what not.
