Amber bulbs in gauge cluster

Look at mine, Look at mine…

Thanks for hte how to…

definately different for the 1992 RS. mine only needed 2 194’s and 2 24’s.

i am trying this diy as i am changing my dash out for a black one, but the 24’s are really loose in the socket, like they almost fall out, i have a 91 ls 5spd…and there are also 3 194’s i believe and not two, unless your not supose to do the larger black one…any help would be great…Matt

you can use 3, but one of the 194’s goes behind the gas low indicator so there is no need to change that one to amber. As for the 24’s not fitting Im not sure why, mine fit perfectly, when I tried 74’s they were too small.

im in the process of doing this now with my new gsr cluster i just got today and one of the gifts for the teg. and i’ve been searching for what the gauges look like at night the normal way and couldnt find a one pic so here is my progress, still gotta get more bulbs.

how is that so white? bright white wouldnt be bad either… *think
are you goint to do the other buttons too? take pics and keep us updated man

1st pic is so white b/c i brightened them up just a bit the rest are what it excatly looks like and once i get more bulbs i’ll post more pics of how it turns out. keep an eye out.

I just finished this project. It took 45 minutes - wasnt as hard as i always thought it was. The hardest part was the speedo cable - my hand and arm is all fuked up (and i have small hands too), but i learned how to get this done without pain or taking up too much time.

Just pull the speedo cable out of the tranny (it’s right under the intake tube). The only thing that holds it in is 1 little clip/clamp thing. Once u do that, u can effectively yank the gauge cluster out enough to disconnect any of the wires behind the cluster and still have enough slack to put it back in with ease. When your done with the cluster, equalize the cable slack between the firewall, plug the cable back into the tranny and then your done.

i cant wait till dark to test it out. i dont know if i can get pics tho, my camera doesnt like low light conditions.

i finally got my 24na bulbs today to finish mine up tomorrow too beat to do it tonight will post pics when finished. and 1 updated pic of the gauges.

Here’s mines. Note - i left the 2 top lights out purposely. I MIGHT reinstall them, but im not sure. I do like the increase contrast without them. What do you think? not bad for a $7 mod…

yeah man looks good nice contrast… here is mine i decieded to finish mine up tonight and i left my Top 2 lights in so i can see my gauges at night.

Im gonna work on a solution to the needles. My objective is to illuminate the needles as much as possible without taking contrast away from the gaugefaces (the stock setup is awful with contrast).

Given the stock stock faces are black (dark) and the needles are white. The stock setup uses 2x74’s (clear) to illuminate the needles. I believe the solution is to create a blacklight type of environment inside the cluster. Blacklights should illuminate the white needles very well and not disturb the black gaugeface. i doubt ill be able to find blacklight 74 bulbs so im gonna attempt to ghettorig my own. Ill post pics as soon as i can get it installed.

here is a link to led automotive bulbs that already have resistors wired in. all you have to do is plug them in. http://www.superbrightleds.com/1157.htm

ok here we go for my last and final time went and got all new bulbs all matching and now i got an almost perfect color match now.

Got this blacklight ghetto rigged…check it out:

i think i might try to find one of those 6inch computer case neon tubes to stuff into the cluster bulb housing.

WTF?!? I did exactly as the first post showed and my lights are so dim comared to all of the rest of yours. I used the exact same bulbs too!! blarg. My cars electrical system just doesnt like me. I think thats what it is. Im planning on doing the UV needles and have already bought the krylon spray paint but am currently hunting for the proper bulb(s) to use.

If ANYONE can help me in any way with why my gauges arent as bright amber as all of yours, or where to get uv bulb(s) in Canada, please lmk! I have been to cdn tire, lordco, and radio shack to name a few and none of them have either the tube lights or bulbs. I might just end up buying from the states cuz thats my last choice.

anybody?

try using your dimmer switch make sure its all the way up… if not then might have a bad ground someplace. idk and i got those bulbs at AutoZone. so if you have all the same brand you will have a better matching color.

and here is my version of my top 2 bulbs for the needles.

Ok well, I’ll check that out once I get the gauges to start workin again  .

On a side note, i bought the krylon fusion spray can mentioned in another thread for making the needles uv sensative. Now, when lookin on ebay i found the best deal suited for me being LED’s. I was wondering if they would work as they are advertised, or do i need to “upgrade them”. What I mean of that is; on the auction page, there is a section that asks if its for car use…yadda yadda where it says that you can upgrade and pay 1 cent extra per bulb to get 12V DC LED’s instead. Do i want that?

Heres a link:

Also, what would be involved in aking out the two top bulbs and wiring two LEDs in there. Thx again guys.

not so sure you might have to ask matt - JH4DB536, he told me that leds are a more concentrated bulb and will shine in one direct spot and may cause the plastic to burn up top but im not to sure. gotta take out your cluster to get to the top to bulbs and take off the 2 metal brackets on top philips screwdriver 2 screws 1 per side. then the white cover is where where the top to bulbs are.
