Anyone use a DSM or other SMIC?

Under the stock air filter housing is a open space where a resonator box-type thing was. Anyone think its possible to put a small eclipse SMIC in there and torch a hole out the side for the inlet piping? Has anyone done this type of set up? I think there would be enough air flow to cool the IC.

doesnt sound like a bad idea, however those eclipse sidemounts are very restrictive to my understanding…if you’re looking for a budget ic, why dont you try and find a Mitsu Starion frontmount, just a suggestion

where else could an SMIC be mounted? i’m on a budget and haven’t found any FMIC’s that would fit into my budget.

An 88 mitsu starion fmic shouldnt cost you more than 75 bucks, check your local junk yard, volvo fmic’s work good also, but i dont know what year or how much they run from a junkyard

The only thing about the starion intercoolers is you have alot of piping you have to do if you want to retain a/c and i dont really know how you can fit all the piping in the front bumper area. What do you guys do with the power steering cooler lines that are in the way (i think thats what they are, the 2 or 3 lines with fins that runs in front of the radiator).

not true at all. DSMs have run high 11’s on the stock SMIC. The Starion is actually a DOWNGRADE because its so inneficient.

EDIT: I’m looking at slips right now of a car that ran a 12.2 at 110mph on a stock 2g sidemount IC. Here are his mods:

SMALL 16g
Ported exhaust manifold and o2 housing
Imagine Motors upper I/C pipe
2.5" turbo back exhaust
“1g style” Nippo fuel pump
3KGT/Stealth K&N
Hallman MBC

this is at 22psi and i’d say… $2k worth of mods.

This is on a 2G too, which are heavier, and have lot more restictive head then the 1G. So thats a high 11’s run with a 1g car.

I was talking about the 1g smic…thats what my buddy John told me…when when i was choosing to either buy an fmic or go to the junkyard he told me to only get one off of an 88starion…and he told me not to get a sidemount off a 1g…BTW he has a 91TSI ran 11.70@109…and he has a 90 VR4 galant and he just ran it last thursday, stock turbo stock sidemount and ran a 13.3@100

everyone and their mom wants one of these, so if you want one and can get it for $75, thats a good deal. And the 1G smic are better than the 2Gs, I believe. You can re-locate you battery to the hatch and lay a small intercooler where the filter/battery was. the Ic faces up and then the charge pipe just makes a straight shot the the TB. Obviously you have to make brackets but I’d post a pic if I knew how…

The stock 1g IC is FIIIIINE. If we’re talking 1g’s, my friend phil went 12.2 @107 on the stock sidemount, and ported stock turbo. Not even 1% of this club will ever see those times, so the 1g sidemount is more then adequate.

Starion FMIC’s are garbage.

formz is right the 1g and 2g are the same ic. if there are dsm’s running low 12’s with em then im sure they can handle whatever a honda’s gonna put to it.

I will have an intercooler and charge piping available soon. If anyone is interested email me. It mounts where your stock airbox sits. You have to relocate the battery to the trunk.
