I got a brand new set of autozone axles the other day. When I backed out of my driveway and turned my wheel to the left the driver side one broke. It was brand new with zero miles on it. The axle and bearings got ripped out of the inner boot that connects to the intermediate shaft. I went to autozone and got another one for a 91 integra since it’s lifetime warranty. I installed it earlier and this is what it looks like. The spindle nut isn’t even torqued down to 50ft lbs and the inner boot is already stretched this much.
Info on the car : 92, b16a, 00 civic si hydro trans, sk7 half shaft.
Either autozone makes axles way too short, or I have the wrong half shaft. I know autozone axles suck, that’s not the issue though. I’ve had their axles on my db1 for years with no issues. About a year ago I replaced my driver side axle on my da and 4 days later it broke at the inner boot, the same way this one did the other day. I’m really thinking my half shaft is too short. Any info guys please!
My car is parked along the curb infront of my house and I got a notice saying it’s gonna get towed within 48 hrs if I don’t fix it. I gotta figure this axle thing out. Thanks guys
Man I wish I could help, but all I can say is that I have bought both my axles from autozone on my DA9 and have no issues. They have been on my car for about a year and my car is lowered. Hopefully you can figure this out soon. Do you know someone with a DA that you can measure their axles and compare them to yours?
I think I have the wrong half shaft. After talking to my friends, they all tell me to get a dc half shaft and a dc axle and i’ll be good. I guess the dc half shaft is longer
There is no need for a DC shaft and axels, I have a feeling autozone gave you a single cam axel instead. I know a lot of people dupe autozone by trading in single cam axels and saying they are integra axels.
Most likely the problem is that the part of the axle that goes in the trany is to short in the cup part of the assembly The short cup ones are for Honda accords and 1 Gen Acura’s they are about 2 7/8 in long. (They will fit but if your car is lowered they may be to short and pull apart) The long ones are for the 2 & 3Gen Acura’s they are about 3 3/8 in long (passenger side)
I will try to post a pic later
It’s the driver side i’m having issues with, not the passenger. I got 2 axles from autozone now and they were both too short. You’re right about that cup thing being the part that’s too short though. It needs to be longer and if you say the 2nd and 3rd gen acura ones are then I need a different half shaft o use them since they require a male intermediate shaft where as the stock sk7 shaft is female on the driver side
You’re using the oem halfshaft for your Integra, yes? Then naturally a G2 axle is what you need…
Yes a DC/G3 axle will work, with the matching halfshaft… but why get a new shaft and different axle? It sounds like AutoZone is giving you the wrong part.
Have you checked the actual Part# from the product you’ve gotten from them?
I would hope that they sold you the right axles. The part in the middle (the axle) should be 16 11/16 in length both sides (tip to tip.) The axle compressed over all length should be 23 1/2 in both sides. The sweat shops that put these together some time put the wrong cup end on them. This is what I have found to be the common problem on lowered cars
Yes I have to oem half shaft (sk7) and the g2 axles arn’t working. I got two different ones from autozone and they were both too short. I just went to orielys and theirs were the same size. The cup is too short on the inner boot but all the other axles i’'m seeing are the same. Maybe I can snag an oem shaft of a g2 at a junkyard that has the right cup and i’ll put it on the new axle I have
A guy was having a similar issue as me and he found out that an ef8 half shaft is 420mm compared to the da9 one which is 400mm. In inches that comes out to 16.53 and 15.74. Subtract the two and the difference is .79 so just a bit more then 3/4 of an inch. I’m thinking if I can find a genuine ef8 half shaft then that will fix my problem since the extra .79 of an inch will allow my axle to sit a bit closer to the hub. Any thoughts on that? Anyone know how rare and hard it might be to find a real ef8 shaft?
I might be able to fit in here. I replaced my passenger side axle from advance auto parts because it had a rip in it and my car was violently vibrating everytime i step on the gas. After replacing it, I found out that my driver side axle is sticking out of the half shaft a little and thats what was causing the vibrating. I push it back in and the vibrating goes away, for like 5 minutes until it started back up again. So I’m assuming it slid out a little again. Could it be a half shaft problem or just the cheap crappy axles?
Even if using brand new/reman’d axles Id replace the c-clips with OEM Honda ones… I’ve heard stories of AutoZone clips failing to hold proper tension, allowing the axle to slide out.
Lol oh yeah, I completely forgot I still have my old oem axle I took off a while ago. Good thing I kept it and hoepfully that’ll fix the problem. Thanks for the tip though !
I have some SOHC axles from a 95 Civic EX and compared them side by side to DA axles. The Civic axles are actually longer than the DA’s. The drivers side is one long complete piece since they don’t use a half-shaft. So I’m going to say that this can’t be the problem.
I got it all figured out guys. I went a bought a half shaft from a 96 integra and an axle from autozone for a 96 and everything worked perfect. No more issues and my car is running fine. I do have a bit of vibration when I accelerate but I assumed that was because of that solid mounts. I’m gonna make sure that axle isn’t sliding out of the half shaft
