i have a 90 ls with the stock ls engine my tranny is starting to give me problems. i have a b17 tranny i can swap but also have a turbo kit that will be installed soon… i dont know if u should use the short geared tranny with the turbo… i know longer gears are better for turbo but will it be faster in 1/4 mile with b17 tranny…i dont know what to do :think:

He is right. On the last generation (MKIV) supras the six speed supras run a 3.13 rear end final drive. To enhance their performance we use the JDM 3.27 final drive. The top speed is reduced from 190 to 182 mph. Not like we would use the vehicle’s potential at maxing out. But with a reduced final drive we get higher trap speeds, quicker E.T.s and reduced road race lap times. I will be running a GT30R on my DA to make ~500whp and ~400ft.lbs tq. The tranny I’m running is a US DC2 ITR tranny’s guts installed in a YS1 92-93 DA9 tranny case. The setup will give me at least 160 mph top speed and the gearing would keep the turbo spooled anytime the vehicle is in motion.
Believe me when I say this LS gears are junk since the powerband always falls short and the gears don’t use multi-cone synchronizers like the vtec synchros. Also think of how many times your engine “fires” from the beginning of the quarter mile to the end. If you were to shorten the gears you’ve made more revs. Which in turn means you’ve made more fuel and spark go thru the engine w/o even increasing the power. Not to mention, for initial acceleration a motor will be a lot happier with shorter gears.

that is the debate. long or short gears.
It depends on ur application. On drag slicks yes a short geared trans in great. But makeing 500 hp on street wheels on the road on a short trans isnt exactly fun. basically if u want to accel fast, u wont get traction until 70 mph. That is why people like the longer geared trans.
I cant get traction on my ls tranny until 3rd gear on my stock turbo.
