b18c5 swap gone wrong

ok so i finally finished my swap late last nite and almost cried when she wouldnt start it cranks like a true champ but wont start i checked plugs and its gettin spark now i think its some thing with the fuel delivery but i have no clue how to go about checking this HELP

Did you get all the wiring sorted out (per your other post)?

Did you double check to make sure all your grounds are good and that all of the wiring connectors are connected?

Does the fuel pump turn on? Are you getting fuel pressure? Are they the correct injectors? All the injectors wired up properly?

Was this a stock swap? or was the motor rebuilt or torn apart at all? It may be important for people to know if any other work has been done to the car or the motor in order to get an idea of what could be wrong. You should go into detail about exactly what the swap is and ALL modifications you have as well as any trouble you had during the install…

most wiring minus that cut wire
all grounds are connected assuming we are only talking about the tranny and valve cover

i dont think i have any fuel pressure this car has been sitting motorless motorless for 2 years i think.

no mods have been done to the engine its straight stock

oh and colin you are my savior if you can solve this problem youll be 2 for 2

You hook up the ground that is in the back of the block? Waterneck area, should be in a bundle of wire. Plug orders? Timing?

huh wat ground is that? do you have any pics

maybe u should flush ur fuel tank, and use new gas.

Yeah, there’s ground on top of the thermostat housing, sometimes people can have starting issues if all the grounds aren’t done properly. But then again sometimes it would still work OK. Seems to be one of those things that only some people have problems with.

I’ll second that info about the gas tank. If the car’s been sitting that long w/o fuel stabilizer then it definitely could have gone bad and would prevent the car from starting.

quick google search in regard to that ground resulted in this crappy photo:

Probably doesn’t help unless you know what you’re looking for. See where the upper radiator hose leads to this side of the motor, look just a tad bit to the left of that, there’s a bolt that goes to the top of the thermostat housing, bolted down is a flat squarish wiring connector with wires leading out from it. It’s not round like your standard ring terminal.

ok yeah i got that one he just confused me with what he said and checked all fuses still good about to check the power going to my pump

and im not using the same gas thats been sitting in there the tank was empty when i got it but there is a chance that the pump could be clogged

You should be able to hear the pump running…

Turn the key to the “ON” position. Listen carefully, the pump should make a little bit of noise (for a second or two) and then it’ll turn off again. It turns off because there is a safety switch which just allows the pump to run when it needs pressure. Once it builds the pressure it’ll turn off if the car is not running and thus does not need to flow fuel.

Watch your gauge cluster, when you first turn the car from “OFF” to “ON” the CEL should illuminate for a second or two and then go off. It is during the time that this light is on which you will hear the fuel pump. The pump and light should turn off at about the same time.

You could also test the wires w/ a multimeter to see when you’re getting a signal.

i had the same experience… i had an issue with the grounds. everything worked up till i turned the key. i would hear a click and then nothing. i redid a ground that was near the tranny and then everything turned on. did you finish plugging in you ECU? good luck!

Next step:

 1. Get those wire colors for the missing plug. Make sure to get the main color and the stripe color.

 2. Check the entire area to see if something is not plugged in.

I’d be looking around the intake manifold, I’m thinking maybe it’s the plug for your IAC or IAT. I think those are both 2 wire sensors and are in that approx area. Other stuff that is around there would be MAP and TPS sensors, but those are 3 wire sensors.

Also, are you throwing any codes? Since the car is not starting it might not be able to throw a code yet. You may need to crank the starter for 15+ seconds in order to get it to throw the code.

take out a spark plug too, and see if you can smell gas. if it is pumping, but not starting, there will be fuel in the cylinder. i would say that there is a good chance that if the car has been sitting for 2 years with an empty tank, the pump might be siezed up.

ok ok ok for sure its a fuel problem i removed the spark plug earlier to check power and when i found no power there was definitly no gas im 85% positive that its something in the tank or the pump cause the filter has no gas either and no pressure sooooooo i guess my battles continues this is so depressing.
thanx for your guys help especially colin ill keep you posted with those wires
I had this same problem, I came to find the 2 prong engine to main harness connector over in front of the pass shock tower looked pluged in but didnt click. so it would crank and crank, just no start

figgured I would throw it out there:)
i just posted this as a response to your question over in justins thread.

Blkack, thanks for confirming the IAC valve

chef, Use a multi-meter to confirm that you’re getting power to the pump. You can also run a power wire to the pump and run power to it directly to see if you can get it to turn on manually.

If you’re getting power to the pump, but it’s not going on, then it should be a bad pump. But be sure to test the pump by running your own wires. The fuel p pump wiring can be confusing, it’s not just a simple ON/OFF circuit. It will turn on and off based on various signals it gets.

If the pump works but you’re not getting power then it’s time to read up in your Helms to see exactly how the system works. Check out Chapter 11, page 118. It gives the procedure for troubleshooting fuel delivery.

:up:EEEHHHHH:up:

just trying to do my part:hi5:

i bet its that ground on the thermostat cover for sure. no fuel no spark and no CEL if its not hooked up

ok all grounds are grounded and im getting spark just no fuel or fuel pressure so im gonna check my pump tom. in the am im getting way to aggrivated especially with the discovery that my best friends dad (arogent domestic junky/ import hater) laughed about the fact that my hard work for the past 2-3monthes boiled down to failure last nite so im a lil discouraged and hopefully i can muster up some motivation tom.

thanx again everyone

Also Make sure your MFR is clicking… If you know were it is located put your hand on it as your turning your key on. You should feel 2 clicks. Always check the easiest first…

My car sat for 4 years and my MFR, pump, and tank were all shot…

Hopefully yours is a little more simple…
