b20 legal in cali??

today i went to referee my car and i had a b20 in the teg before and the ref said that b20s are now legal to swap in our integras if gen3 integra parts are used. so idk if the ref was right or not but i was just checking if anyone else has heard this? it would be awesome for people to BAR there tegs with B20s and they would never hae to worry about being hussled by cops anymore.

You can’t swap a truck motor in a compact car. The ref is ether playing with you or is new and don’t know the law.

i know the law for it. i got busted for it cuz the previos owner put a b20 in the my car, but the ref said it has been in effect for about a month or less. so its fairly new. but he said you can use gen3 aftermarket parts and he told me i can get a b20 bar’d in my car now if i want.

id ask him where to find that online or do the reasearch. if thats true it would be nice considering b20’s normally run more effiencent then our old b18a’s

shoot im gonna look and see if i can find anything online

yea cuz i still have the tegs original b20 that tina put in the teg so i may rebuild it and make it better than before.

there you go. good idea if thats the new law. just do internals and make the motor look as stock as possible on the outside:)

I’m excited for this. While I’d love to get a GS-R, it would be easier to find a clean teg and drop a b20 in again. I loved the b20 setup and got 31-34mpg. I would get it signed off so I’d never have to worry about it again!

tomorrow im off to the referee again and i will ask for some paper work on this whole b20 thing. and let eeryone know about this!!

Coolio let us know whats up…

Id also call the California clean air resource and baring to ask them.

yea if this is true then im excited. im gonna go all out with my b20 i have in my shop and make it put some serious power down. :ohyeah:

well if it’s true great.I guess you would need the ls intake manifold ,distributor and all the rest of the stuff.but i think it would still have to be obd2 in order to do it.so that means all the obd 2 crap is needed right.so pressure sensor in tank, two o2 sensors and obd2 cat?correct me if I’m wrong.

im not sure mike. Im thinking youd make it specific to what model teg you have right? 90-91 would be obd-0 and 92-93 would be obd-1.

thats the way id think it would be. but we need to know if the swap is even legal first. It would open the door for a nice easy swap

that particular teg is already converted to obd 1…

well b20 are obd 2 cars i would think the only way to do it is if you use obd2 integra parts.I think you are suppose to put in a newer motor into a car that is the same age or newer.so if it is a 96 and up motor you need to have all the 96 and up smog stuff and sensors.so trying to stick it into a obd 0 or 1 car would not be legal. now from what I remember the b20 was not legal because it was a “truck” motor ,so it could not be in a passenger car. now if the law is relaxed a bit ,freat but at least for my obd0 car I still think it would not fly with the ref.unless I convert to obd2,if thats the case I would put a k20 in it.if I’m gonna do all that work it might as well put out alot of power.my 2 cents.

I’m pretty sure it’s perfectly legal. and the thing with older engines in newer cars is that the engine has to be the same year or older than the chassis. (I’m pretty sure but correct me if I’m wrong).

Make things easy and just bore out a B18B. B20 is the same thing as a B18B(BORED), basically it.

I guess its legal in some areas. But I think it is that the motor had to be the same or newer for emission purposes. In my area thats how it is anyways and I didn’t have to convert to obd2. I do have to go to obd1 for my s300 though.

ahh yea I see what your saying mike. i guess youd have to still consult a ref to find out what would fly. laydee mini cali laws are strict. basically the law here states a motor from an “suv” can not be put in a car. technically a crv is considered an suv chassis so a b20 is illegal in our cars. Unless the rules have been changed it still stands to be illegal if you get pulled over.

we did so many b20 swaps back in 02-04. those were some nice strong motors. it would be nice to see the laws change

Reason 100 I don’t miss living in Cali. Dealing with smog ref’s and carb crap sucks. :surrend:

Cali law sucks. Move to CO! lol jk. Hope you guys figure out whats going on with the law, if its changed or what not. Would be awesome. OR else I guess you guys have to move. :manual:
