B20B swap in California question.

So my stock B18A1 is slowly going and I’ve been searching for a replacement because I don’t have the funds to rebuild it. A family member of mine is willing to part with his B20B and offered it to me and showed me this link: http://honda-tech.com/showthread.php?t=3060132

while reading the thread I came across this post:

“So the word getting passing b20b’s and z’s as of yesterday is that it has become harder for people to find replacement b18’s to run in stock tegs and there is a huge selection of b20s in california honda parts stores and motor tranny shops that they are allowing the b20 in 4door tegs and civics. I wouldnt show up in a crx with one lol. This came from the mouth of the reff manager yesterday.”

So is there any G2 guys out here in California that have done this?

This is the only information I have seen that seems legitimate due to the picture of the BAR sticker.

Move out of California and leave the bullshit laws behind.

/ thread.

Stupid.

Anyways, the only way to see if it will work for you is to ask a ref at a BAR station, then go from there.

If you want a b18a I have one let me know greazemunkey73@yahoo.com

Lol it was just for a laugh, try not to take it too seriously

PM me about it.

a b20 wont pass in cali, its a small suv motor in a car. automatically failing it

I’ve heard that they changed the law about it. Don’t quote me on it but heard it from a few Honda guys in the area

Been doing more research about this and found yet another BAR’d B20B: http://forums.nwp4life.com/zerothread?id=38200

Seems like this is a grey area, It’s illegal but passes? I would think if they allow one car to do it they should allow all cars to do it.

Figure I might as well swap it and rebuild the b18 slowly as funds allow (I have a year before I need to smog it). When it comes time to smog it I’ll try and BAR it and if it doesn’t work out I can always put the b18 back in.

Exactly why I originally asked if any other Californian G2 guys have been able to do it. I’ve read that people claim that ref’s say it can be used as a replacement motor now.

Why not do as already suggested and call the actual ref?

Otherwise you get the usual “my buddy has a friend who’s cousins sister had a bf with a BAR’d B20 in his DA”-internet’esque response.

You won’t know a 100% answer until you talk to the person in charge, in your area, of BAR’ing. Believe it or not, the internet does not know all.

This is true and I do plan on calling them, But just wanted to see if anybody has done it in a DA and can show I.E. BAR sticker that they have had a B20 BAR’d like the wagon and the Integra.

The legality of the motor swap doesn’t really bother me for if it becomes an issue (smog time) I’ll have the b18 ready to put back in if it can’t be BAR’d.

But seeing if other G2’s have had it BAR’d is just more evidence to bring forth to them to dispute with if I can’t get it done.

email me if you like on the the b18a we dont have pm’s here greazemunkey73@yahoo.com

I know someone that owns a smog shop and they said they didn’t change it. But sometimes the state ref won’t know what they’re looking out, or sometimes pass in by mistake. They’ve actually caught a few mistakes made by the state refs.

so a s of recently two friends of mine said that the DMV has released a list of motors used as replacement motors for our aging cars.from what they told me it is now considered allowable in our cars as suitable replacements.think it’s the fact the b 18 are harder to find as the car gets older.they only brought this up cause they got a crx with d16z6 in it and it is now considered a suitable replacement motor for that frame with out needing to BAR it.i have not confirmed this but it is what i heard.if that is the case i’m gonna shove the b20 that has been collecting dust in my garage, into my da…

Could your friends show proof of what they told you? Word of mouth is one thing but if there is a link to this DMV list that would be really awesome.

yeah i’ve been searching…and can’t find it…might go to dmv on tuesday and ask.

my b20 passed last november

People may have gotten passed here and there, but it’s been technically illegal for a long, long time…

But word is that they’ve since changed the legality of the B20 in a passenger car… Hence this thread.

The OP is looking for actual information about this… Not simply “my car passed last year”.

If b20 is legit. I’m trading my geezer for one :stuck_out_tongue:
