My wife’s DA smells of rotten eggs on a known working cat, and bad mileage. wierd thing is on LONG road trips mileage is killer…but around the city it sucks balls.
And I have my own DA for comparison…so its not driving style or anything like that.
I finally bothered to do the math and whatnot. I always reset my trip odo when I fill up. Today the hand was literally in the red on empty. I filled up and found out that although it was on empty, there was literally 10L left in the tank (1/5 of a tank).
I did the math.
39.144L + 8.977L ($10 from last weekend) = 48.121L
48.121L / 540.4km / 100km = 8.9L/100km
Thats good. Our 07 Mazda3 gets about 7.9L/100km. Our Escape gets about 13L/100km.
Im having a gas mileage problem aswell. I replaced:
Fuel Filter
Air Filter
Plugs w/ NGK’s
Wires w/ NGK’s
Distributor (fried my previous coil)
I’m only getting around 250 - 280 to a full tank depending upon how I drive. I do alot of freeway driving though and still it seems like I have a loss of performance from last year and worse gas mileage. I also smell rotten eggs after getting on it a little.
I’m contemplating replacing the o2 sensor, but I don’t really have money for one right now. I’ve also thought of replacing the coolant temperature sensor which could also be faulty by keeping the car rich AFTER it goes through it’s warm up stage. Injector o-rings also sounds like a good idea that I never thought of but I don’t smell any gas in my engine bay…
I’m wondering if my cap and rotor might possibly be bad because I did use a USED distributor with the cap and rotor I got on the car. How would I know when the cap and rotor are ready to be replaced?
I guess some was inside my gas tank and bent the sending unit float or something. The most I ever got out of a tank was 280 and usually get 250. I fill up when my gas light comes on. fill it up till it stops and it only takes 10 gallons. so i usually get about 25 city. how many gallons do you guys put in from when your gas light comes on?
i just bought an o2 sensor. My mileage has been slowly and steadily declining. I just filled up about… an hour ago. My trip was only 218 on 10.7 gallons. I was only getting 20 mpg!
That’s quite a decrease to my 250 - 280 I was getting a couple months ago. I also noticed it bad when I took a 5 hour trip, (2 1/2 1 day, 2 1/2 next day going home)
Freeway driving my car was only getting 21 mpg, I had to fillup on the way back…
SO. I’ll replace my o2 next week, and report back.
On my recently sold '91 GS, I would get 275-295 miles with 70% city driving and 30% HWY driving. If I do more HWY driving, I would get 300-315 miles to the tank. It takes about 11-12 gallons to fill. The gas light would normally come on at around 280 miles.
I’ve only had my '93 LS-S for two months now and so far I’m getting about 280 miles to a tank with the same amount of city and HWY driving. Maybe I can get more because the gas light doesn’t come on, but I don’t want to take the chance of being stranded somewhere because what if the gas light doesn’t work? If it doesn’t work, it wouldn’t be able to notify me.
Supposively, the '92-'93 engines should get better gas mileage than the '90-'91 engines by 3-4 miles per gallon, but I surely haven’t notice a difference. What I do notice between my two DA’s is that the gas gauage moves at a different rate.
In the '91, the gas gauage moves slowly to the middle. It would show 180-200 miles at the half tank mark. Then after than, it’s like a free fall to the empty side ending at about 275-295 miles.
In the '93, the gas gauage moves quickly to the middle or sometimes to the 1/4 mark. It would show only 150-160 miles, but then it would sit there for a good 100 miles or so before it starts moving towards empty. However, the light never comes on. I usually fill it up at 280-290 miles and it’s about 10.5 gallons. The last tank I filled up, which was yesterday, it was 11.369 gallons, but it I ran it up to 308 miles. The gas light never came on too.
Anyone knows when the light is suppose to come on?
Anyway, I know these cars can get much better gas mileage than what everyone here is posting. My brother’s '91 GS somehow gets 300+ miles all the time and he drive about 80% city and 20% HWY. He can get 320 miles and not worry about running out of gas with city driving. The funny thing with his car is that there is not much difference in mileage even if he does more HWY driving. The car seems to burn the same amount of gas whether it’s on city streets or highways.
I get GREAT gas mileage in my DA most of the time…
Last week I took about 100 mile trip to my parents place and I had exactly 1/2 tank for the trip. When I left I reset the trip meter and when I got home the next day, and hit my driveway…the total trip was 208 miles! (Approx 29.7mpg)
I can get as high as 400 per tank with my DA ALL highway…
so I put $15 in that night (Shell Premium as always), and got almost exactly 1/2 again. Reg normal daily driving this week, around town and not resetting the trip meter and I am at 316 on the same meter and im on empty!!
That’s only 108 miles on a 1/2 tank!! WTF??? That works out to approx 15mpg city!
this car has new EVERYTHING…besides the actual injectors.
the motor was rebuilt (stock) in March 2009 including dead on valve adjustment and complete seal and gasket kits
Injector O Rings *NEW
Dist Honda OE *NEW

etc…
PLEASE…I dont want to have the MSD is not needed discussion, been there done that. It’s what I choose to run and I have been running that system since last summer with nothing but good experiences with and amazing increase in gas mileage, so that cannot be the problem as this just started.
What could be wrong? And why the DRASTIC difference in City/Hwy Mileage?? Obviously something is malfunctioning somewhere, but where should I begin??
Correct me if I’m wrong, but I believe that I read in the owners manual once that the light comes on when there is 2 gallons remaining in the tank. Mine does not work on the DA, I just try and keep it above 1/4 tank when possible…
letting the fuel tank get to less than 1/4 tank can lesson the life of your fuel pump. junk/crap in the fuel usually floats up. when u let it get below 1/4 tank often, the fuel sump gets clogged up, which later down the road burn up ur fuel pump bcuz it’ll get clogged up and no fuel will lubricate the innards of the pump.
also the fuel pump uses the fuel to keep it cool, so keep it below 1/4 tank in the summer will make it run hotter, causing it to burn out quicker aswell… basically… there is advantage to letting it go below that… haha
only advantage would be weight savings. i ran in an auto-x event with like 1/4 tank b4 we started… and boy was that scary. with all the cornering n stuff, my gauge was fluctuating so much, showing right at the e line at the end of the run… sometimes below. i was worried but as soon as i stopped and settled down it went back up. just not a good idea for me to do that again.
Was this for me? Or general information about the fuel system? If its in reference to my situation, I very very rarely let my tank get below 1/4 tank. I only do that If use a fuel additive (lucas fuel treatment) ie: run it to almost empty and top it off…or taking a long trip to where I am keeping track of MPG…I am also running a fairly new Walbro 255lph…

If that was not for me…then good info! [/QUOTE]
its just info. my bad sometimes i hit quote, sometimes reply.
Everything “tune-up” related has been replaced since 4/09…i think my problem is as simple as my catalytic converter being clogged, im looking into replacing that now, and we’ll see what happens.
Everything else on the car seems to be running correctly
Bump for anyone else having bad fuel mileage problems. I’ve been shifting at like 2200 in all gears and i’m getting around 330MPG straight city driving. My commute to work is 17 miles both ways daily with heavy traffic. Nice!
