BLKACK1's Build Thread

One step forward

2 Steps Backwards

While i in the process of draing collant, removing the radiator and hoses. I get this mess to deal with now :bang:

:: booost ::

what happened?

All I did was remove the drain plug. Im really uncertain at this point what to do. AAA metric said he could ā€œmaybeā€ get one but the last tap he sold in that size range was a $150.00. no way thats even an option for me at this point. going to see my friend at acura to see if he has one/acsess to one that I can use. If he doesnt have one… Short of welding it shut and rerouting my coolant line. I dont know what Im gonna do.

Does Anyone happen to have a 28x1.00 mm tap. Im willing to pay shipping both ways as well as a rental fee…

It stripped?

the outer portion of thread in the black are gone. I was hoping to be able to salvage the inner thread and just seal it up with whatever it needs

I see. That’s really frustrating.

you think that would be my biggest problem right now but it isnt. I wont go into that right now though. but yeah! ubber fustrating!! just gotta take it one step at a time at this point.

Ouch!

Is the threaded insert steel or aluminum? Looks like there should be plenty of meat there to accept new threads, but if that doesn’t work out you could explore the option of a helicoil insert. Another option could be re-tapping to an SAE size instead of metric and find an appropriate drain plug (assuming the fact that it’s metric is the reason for the high price).

I wouldn’t recommend welding it up. Could be really tricky and may cause more issues than it solves.

Failing that, maybe you could find someone at a local machine shop who’s willing to make a house call?

Its not the plug that concerns me. thats trash. maybe its hard to tell from the picture but its the coolant port on the front of the block that im concerned about cause thats where the turbos coolant feed will be coming from.

Helicoil is an Interesting thought but that would require I very large drill bit and an drill press, both would require removal and complete disasembly of the block.

traveling machinest… who knows!!! at the very least I can take pictures and talk to some local shops for recomendations. good ideas, thank you!

Might be easier to just machine the threads down flat and install a freeze plug . Also I have seen marine application plugs that have a big rubber slug that are expandable . Napa has them…ive seen them installed when the hole is either too messed up or in a difficult to reach area of an engine. Just a lil thought anyway …keep up the good work.

could you enlighten me on the purpose of the oil pan baffles?

if you can’t get a tap i would find a bolt that size and cut a notch in the bolt and try to remake the threads with the bolt. i’ve done it plenty of times on oil pans on diesel engines. if it doesn’t work i would get a piece of aluminum welded. once welded you can pierce it and tap your turbo coolant line into it.
could you enlighten me on the purpose of the oil pan baffles?
its ment to keep the oil traped at the pickup so under hard cornerin your not starving the motor for its much needed life blood.

in order to do that, I have to remove the motor and completly disasemble it. Not an Option at this moment. If I have to pull the motor and take it apart. its not realy worth rebuilding it with the old parts. might as well just rebuild the motor. all which I dont have any more money for at the moment.

this was a thought I had since finding a tap is becoming nearly impossible. I tried cleaning the threads out of the old plug but it wasnt working to well. the alumimum has pretty much mated itself to the plug and doesnt seem to want to come off. im might try and find a new plug and try that.

those are great suggestions guys and I apprieciate them, but after doing my research and reviewing all my option, Ive decided this is probly my best route. First im gonna try and clear out what threads are left, screw my fiting into place with some kind of sealant adn just have it welded into place to ensure a leakfree seal. this is if and only if the cast aluminum block take to the weld ( something that ive herd mixed reviews on…)

So I might be making a major change to this build once I get this issue all sorted out. I dont wnat to go into too many details at this moment, but I have a very big discision to make right now and it hasnt been an easy one for me make. everyone wish me luck that I make the right choice…

Spill the beans Glynn. enough of this suspense

BEst of luck Glynn! I will be down to help this weekend. I’ll bring my captain planet PJs and stay the night. DO you have a crawler?

I was thinking about your plug issue, maybe a new plug will still work. Use some JB weld with it, and I bet it will hold. If it is one of the plugs in the back of the block for oil I have a few, and can get a few from the yard if its the front though I think they are the same. I know its pressurized, but it’s worth a shot. So I’ll bring em up.

Calling you now sucka!

Dang man, definitely let us know how you figure that predicament out… I’m at a loss for ideas aside from using a new plug with some form of adhesive/bonding agent.

I’m confident that you’ll get it handled though

I wish I could man but havent made any desicions yet. Ill Tell you what I DO know. My mechanic says a tap is out of the question but is on the hunt for a dye and a very generous Mr. Allman let me know today that he is doing the same. My man! other then that everything is on hold for a week or 2…

Dont fret little lady, ill be around in the springtime to smash out on you :naughty:

LOL as long as your not walking out in the buff. you can wear what ever you please  ill make sure the spare room is ready for visitors sorry B, my phone was pwnd by the couch cousions. please do bring one. i might be able to use it to clean up what threads are left.

Otherwise Ive got it covered

ya you can definitely weld your coolant plug into the block ive seen my fabricator do it a bunch of times. you just need someone who know’s how to weld aluminum really well. you’ll figure it out i’m not worried.

LOL you better turn up the boost. You dont wanna get beat by a NA @ this altitude.

I like this idea. I would not put anymore money into that B18a than needed…but i know how you like things Glynn so do what you think is best.
