Boost in Time Attack??

Hi,

with the goal I wanna archeive, I need to go boost… The project is for Time Attack. I’ve already heard that Boost+Circuit Racing=No. The things that make me hesitate is that Mazda, Nissan, Toyota with turbocharged engine can do it.

I just would like to make sure that a Honda Engine would be able to make it to.

Let’s say…a Forged K24a1.

I post here because it’s going into a DA9. No I’m not near to do it, I want to be informed so I can plan my things better.

Thanks in advance!

Mazda, Nissan, and Toyota turbo cars are typically RWD (or AWD).

The K series time attack cars I’ve seen have had understeer problems without turbo; I couldn’t imagine the scope of a turbo car’s handling issues. From what I remember, there are only a handful of successfully turbocharged Honda circuit cars in existence. Its a completely different ballgame on a circuit, power really doesn’t matter much and there’s no guarantee that more power will make you faster so there’s no huge drive for it like there is for hardparkers and drag racers.

OP, if I were you I would stick with the stock motor, rebuild it with a efficent rod/piston combo, do a little bit of head work, shoot for about 230-270 on low boost and that is very controlable power in a FWD car, once you pass 300+ your just spinning the tires every gear coming out of turns, that’s not to say you won’t spin with 230-270 but no as bad, and you won’t have to back of the throttle as much in turns and coming out of turns.

Thanks for the replies!

300whp is a maximum that I gave me…a limit.

If I have 250whp, I will be happing. The thing is that I would like to be turbo.

N/A or Turbo, if I have 250whp, I will spin…lol

Do not forget that the chassis will be modded a lot to be able to handle that kind of power.

Any other suggestions?

Thanks

You can get 300 whp with a naturally aspirated K series setup. 250 whp is manageable, 300 isn’t.

Like I said, the only real place you’ll see the difference is in the straights. You’ll be getting tailed and passed by 170 whp DAs everywhere else.

Here’s a good example.

3 seconds faster with almost 60 less horsepower. Same owner, same builder, same wheels and tires, same drivers, same track, same configuration. The white car even had a welded in cage whereas the black car doesn’t. In this case, more power slowed the car down.

Now, I’m not saying you can’t have a 300 whp circuit car, because its been done successfully, even on boost. I believe the Top Fuel circuit car was pushing 350+ and it held a track record for a while, though I’ve seen videos of it squirming all over the place and the first thing the drivers said when they got out was “I wish it was N/A.”

If you’re going to do it, know it can be done but you’re already at the disadvantage of doing it in a DA chassis. Its going to take you a lot of work just to get to where everyone else starts from, but if you keep the power and torque reasonable you’ll be able to tune the car to handle as well as mildly tuned DC2s and EK4/9s with stock K series engines.

Thanks Digital!

So if I keep the power around 250-275whp in the DA, I would get the best performances of it.

I think I can be more reliable with 250-275whp than 300whp, true^

Thanks

kinda stupic\d comment i’m about to make… kinda reminds me of my gran turismo days trying to conquer those windy circuits with a 1000hp r32 skyline… damn that was hard.

Went to the track on Sunday.

Black DC2 with newly finished 304 whp K24/K20…

BROKE on lap 1. Didn’t run the rest of the day.

Black EF with stock B16A on street tires…

Hatch or CRX?

This guy.

oooooo!!! that hatch is tits!!! i had an black si just like that!!!

do you know any kind of setup info, suspension, engine?

Stock B16A with maybe intake and header. Revalved Konis and I believe GCs, no cage, no strut bars even. Falken Azenis 615s. We’re supposed to go out on Friday so if we do I’ll ask him more about it.

yeah if you would that would be great, have a soft spot for black hatches.

you need to beat the everloving shit out of whoever told you that. then have them watch a formula 1 race.

Its not completely out of the ballpark for FF platforms though. Turbo FR and MR cars handle much differently then turbo FF cars, especially those with steep boost curves and high HP.

if i were doing a time attack type car, i’d probably use no bigger than a gt2871.

I think the reason most people stay away from it is because there’s really no need for it anymore. If you can get to 300+ whp N/A, with no boost lag, then there’s really no reason to turbo a car since 300+ is already bordering on too much power. They’re out there, and there are some crazy fast turbo FF circuit cars around, but it just doesn’t seem like the “best” way to do things to a lot of people, myself included.

with ya 100%.

i spose if i could go with k-series i wouldn’t worry about boost.

i’m just too stuck on the b i guess. :stuck_out_tongue:

Same here… but there’s people pulling 240+ out of N/A B series with honest reliability as well, so there’s not too much of a disadvantage you’re taking considering most K series cars out there are in the 250-275 range.

Thanks for all the inputs!

I really want to go turbo even if it’s not the Best for Time Attack (And I understand that). It’s a personal preference

After thinking a lot about it, and with only a K20A3 (Got a deal on it…kind of low on money), I will put the motor to 250whp and it will be enough for me  Will put more into aero/suspension/brake/wheel.
