questoin, it has been said that boost makes you understeer, now my questoin is to why boost will make you understeer?
im in the process of going all out on my chassis and suspension, and i want to also up the power level, i love boost and i would like to go that route, however if its gonna have a negative aspect on my handling then i wont, but before i choose to dtich the boost, i would like to know why the turbo can affect my handling?
and if possible what mods are out there to counteract the understeer caused by boost?
Well think about it like this… if your turning and giving it gas at the same time at mid RPM range once your boost spools your tires will just spin. and when your tires are loosing traction while your turning, you stop turning and start going straight. I think it might be also called Torque steer.
Someone correct me if I am wrong but torque steer is when the motor wants to yank the wheel out of your hand when coming off the line. But anyways some of the ppl with lsd might be able to vouch for this but I have a friend with a VW hatch that is turbo and has a pretty good amount of mods, well he just put a lsd in and said that now when he hits off ramps he can give alot more throttle and power through them compared to before he had it. This might help it the understeer.
Boost doesn’t create understeer, power does. Just learn to drive with a softer foot around corners cause if you just go WOT,tires will spin cause you’re making alot more power. If you want a car that you can hit the corners hard in, choose a smaller turbo where the powerband is more broad and predictable.
BTW, I have LSD, it doesn’t make much of a diff in a corner if you’re still making too much power
LSD does absolutely nothing for handling midcorner, understeer actually gets worse because now your loosing traction on the outside wheel too, instead of just the inside, but this shouldnt matter because you should not be on the throttle heavy midcorner. LSD helps mostly with corner exiting, but if you really know what the real aspects of driving are and you either been to driving school or have enough experience you will know your corner exits are where the time is really made up on a track, there and braking.
and you shouldnt be applying throttle midcorner around the apex, you should coast or keep steady speed with light throttle and focus on powering out of the corner post apex.
you could be making 140hp or 600hp, neither matter midcorner because you shouldnt be in the throttle anymore than what is neccesary to keep the car going the same speed, therefore the orginal argument is false. power is irrelevant to proper handling.
