boosted b16a, blown ? symptoms..

spiked at 16psi because of a unknown wastegate spring

at the time, it had -

custom turbo setup, open downpipe, no o2 sensor, 2" chargepiping
jdm 1st gen stock b16a
obd-0 LS ecu
stock injectors
FMU (with lines routed backwards)
stock spark plugs

after it spiked once, i drove it home as safe as possible. it ran good, then bad, then good, then bad… just idling, trying to get down the block & back…

since then, i thought the problem was in the tuning, fuel, everywhere else i didnt touch…

installed obd-0 to obd-1 conversion harness
s200 w/ boost w/ a stock b16a turbo basemap
got rid of the fmu
1 step colder plugs regapped @ .028

it idled fine for about 5 minutes, datalogging it, then when i drove it down the driveway, trying to get it out… it would backfire/miss/rev limit itself @ 1200rpm.

at a stop, revving, it would limit to 1200, when trying to drive, it would limit itself aswell… if you rev it quickly, it would not limit it…

now i’ve removed the turbo kit, and installed a DC header, i dont know what’s going on, it doesnt hold idle by itself, but if you keep on the gas, it will stay running. fuel pressure is good, unsure about spark. but it’s running. but when you bring it up near 3k, it would miss.

pulled the valve cover off, and doesnt look like any of the valves are bent. no rockers look stuck…

should i attempt to pull the head? maybe it’s the headgasket? maybe it’s rings? any ideas guys?

Do a comp test and leakdown test…
ANd I can’t udnerstand how you mixed the FMU lines up. it states IN and out… also this is a good example as to why you shouldn’t jsut aly into it and realzie the WG spring is set way high… I’ll always do a 2nd or 3rd gear roll in SLOWLY and if I se eit overboosting, I lay off. easy… But goodluck with taht man. Seems liek you’re having alot of probs ever since boosted :frowning:

edit: You’ll still need inejctors for the new hondata s200 setup. otherwise you’ll stopa dding more fuel at a certain point.

i did a compression test a couple of days ago… 200 across the board…

i dont have the leakdown tool, i’ll ask my other co-worker at the shop if he has one at home…

the fmu thing was really really stupid. it was the last part of my setup that i needed to install, and it was late… i saw “out” on the bottom, and somehow, i forgot fuel goes in through the other way…

i was told with my setup, it was okay to run stock injectors if i’d strictly stay at 6psi…

i opened uberdata and loaded a stock basemap for a b18.

6000 rpm, WOt = injector duty cycle 75 %
7000 rpm, WOt = 85%
WOT = 0 psi
injector close to 90 % duty cycle = bad and not effective

i don’t know for the b16, but i really think bigger injectors are a must in boosted setups… not enough fuel = kaboomm, and its a one time event

causing detonation… so what do u think i should do? pull the head?

somebody i know already got this type of miss.
he detonated and one of the spark plug electrode bent so much that it touched the metal tip.
your spark plug are ok ?

i’ve gone through 2 new sets of ngk v-power plugs…

first set, had turbo on still, same problem

removed turbo setup, installed another new set, same problem…

ok, it idled for a quick couple seconds earlier. vacuum was around 10 - 13, searching… idle bounced up and down for a little bit, then shut down…

i took the distributor off, and got my old distributor. im removing all the obd-1 stuff, and putting everything back to stock to run on the b16a.

has anyone heard of NGK v-power spark plugs having interference with hondata s200 programing? i was told from a friend who i got this from that it has some sort of frequency interference with it…

true? or myth?

only way to check would be to get some other injectors, maybe just some regular $1.25 coppers and see

u mean spark plugs… eh, well, im just going to try to take all the obd-1 & hondata stuff off, then see if it’ll run…

sorry to hear about your problem, since you went back to na, did you try a stock b16a ecu? might make trouble shooting a bit easier. could it be low fuel pressure?

humm…

installed all obd-0 stuff back on, put everything to stock, and it runs… weird… it holds idle most of the time, other times it would die down… maybe the throttle body is dirty…

i turned the idle up, so now it seems okay. runs good.

some friends said maybe im one of the lucky few…

no more boost for me… no more tiresome nights. . :dozing:

thanks for the help guys…

You’ve already got everything to boost that B16, it doesn’t pay to go back now. Just throw some bigger injectors in there and tune the SOB!

kit is up for sale. a couple friends are interested already, and hondata is going back to my friend, so i’ll have about 500 in my pocket again…

hey what all do you have for sale and are you selling as a kit or parting out?

sorry, it’s local buyers right now… i dont think i’ll ship it… sorry.

hey whatever, its cool, just offering some money for some parts

weren’t you boosting a non-vtec type r motor before this? what happend to that motor?

  glad to hear the tegging is back in running condition.

the itr/b20 (block/head) non-vtec motor, it uhh… well… long story short, it always smoked, then it finally made a hole in one piston, and cracked all ringlands, and ended up with alot of smoke…

sorry to whore your thread, but do you think it just needed to be tuned or some other reason? i was considering throwing a b16a crank, + b16b rods/pistons in a b18a1. figured it would be fun since it would cost me almost nothing. do you still have that itr block? i was looking for a ctr block for a while then i bought a turbo kit instead. lol.
