My little turbo project is starting to get on my nerves and I haven’t even really started yet. This little POS turbo I bought used on ebay has 3 of the 5 exhaust housing bolts broken off. So how do I go about removing the broken bolts? If anyone else has had this happen, I would like to know what you did.
uh oh thats a problem, other than drilling those out and retapping i dont know of a way to get those out, problem is the housing heats up so much that those bolts get seized in there really bad, good luck with that.
SInce I don’t have the proper tools to remove and re-tap I’m wondering if it will be better to buy another exhaust housing rather than buy the tools needed to get the bolts aout and make new threads.
I was supposed to be test fitting my pipes and turbo stuff today but it looks like I will be workng on this.
All you need is a drill, a drill bit, and a tap. I’m sure you can get your hands on a drill and a bit, and taps are cheap and easy to find. Much cheaper than buying another housing.
have you ever tried drilling out bolts in a turbo housing??? i have, and it sucks, bolts are harder than concrete, better off using a drill press and some really nice metal bits.
Explicit, does that 4 dr still have the longblock…maybe we can work out a deal? check my for sale thread maybe youd be interested in some of that stuff too http://www.g2ic.com/forums/showthread.php?t=122620&page=1&pp=20
I had to shell out a chunk of change for that housing. I still have receipts so lemme know.
Yes, take it to a machine shop. They may be able to take the broken bolts out and if they can’t they can drill and tap better than you can. I had this problem on my turbo and the machine shop took care of it.
If your going to try an extractor make sure its of good quality and take your time. Its common to break those off in there too, if that happens your making a bad situation worse. We had one that we had to weld a bolt onto the broken bolt to get it out.
I’d take that housing to a machine shop and let them have their way with it. It shouldnt cost too much.
I couldn’t get it to budge so I went ahead and gave it to friend who does work at a machine shop.
But this just brought up another question about where to buy new studs and bolts since I don’t have any.
This place is in SoCal but I’m sure they can ship you what you need if you can’t find a place in your area. They have Grade 8 bolts which is what you should use.
this time… I know ppl are gunna flame over this… but slap some ANTISEIZE on those bolts same shit happend to someone i kno… ever since we only remove the bolts if we are gunna recoat them in antiseize to ensure easier removal
