Car dies after start up!

Gotta problem. Need some help. Plz! Lol car turns on fine when cold. Idles high but as
It warms up Rpms go down like normal. Problem starts after I get to my destination and turn the car off. When I go to start it again, it turns on but then putters and dies. If I give it gas, rev it up to like 5 gs, and let it come down. The car stays on and is finE. problem occurs only now and again. My thought is a choke switch is staying on or something. Any info would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

auto or stick? year? C.E.L? first thought is that its the igniter in your distrubutor or your fuel relay, but more info from you would be helpful

check codes first. always

90 auto. Distributor was replaced a few months ago. The rotor was all burnt out. Had to replace the ignition coil
Rotor and cap. It’s doesn’t always do it. Doesn’t throw any lights so idk if there are codes. Thought the s3 light would flash if it threw a code?

Any recent tune up? Spark plugs, spark plug wires, new fuel filter, etc. Throw some seafoam in there and see if it gets better.

regardless of whether the CEL illuminates, check the codes. they could still be stored in memory

mine is doing the same…i got a code 43…mine also bucks when its cold until it reaches operating temperature. ill be changing my o2 sensor when i’m not lazy and feeling cheap lol

Does it start and die right away? Or does it stay started for a minute? (like putt putt putt die)

mine starts and dies right away…then ill restart and feather the gas and get to moving then its fine…but it mainly happens when i go to one persons house o_0

Mine only does it after its warmed up. When it’s cold it’s fine. And it starts and automatic starts trying to cut out and die. I have to re it up for a bit and then it stays on. And it only on start up when warm. Haven’t had it do It to me while at a stoplight or anything. Smells like its running rich. Could that be causing it to??!

Mine does this same thing. Starts fine when cold. Typically on my way home from work, if it gets to operating temp, and i stop somewhere close (only 2 or 3 miles) then turn it off, when i go to turn it back on, it starts fine, the needle goes up but when it comes back down to idle it just shuts off totally. If i try to restart it, it just turns over, and over and over. I let it sit for 2 or 3 minutes and it fires up fine, and idles perfectly.

I have no idea what it could be and it pisses me off everytime. It only does it on those short trips after getting to operating temp and it wont do it for a few months, then it will happen a few times in a week.

fuel filter?

Ive replaced my fuel filter thinking it was the problem but didnt fix it. I also ran some Gum-out cleaner through it and no help. It does it very rarely, but like i said, still ticks me off. haha

(Not to thread jack, but considering this is a common G2 problem, im sure we have the same problem)

mine doesnt just sit there and never turn over…once i crank it again, it starts…i have to feather the gas and get rolling for it to remain started…but once i go 100 ft, its fine

i’d check resistance of the ect sensor. first cold, then hot. see if it falls within spec. if that checks out good, test the o2 sensor

mine is already throwing a o2 sensor…i just havent replaced it yet

Mine also smells like its running rich. Im going to get some new plugs and see if that helps out, and maybe advance my distributor.

As for the O2, how would that cause this type of isse? Would it really cause the car to totally shut off once its started? My cel isn’t on, but I might be worth replacing anyway.

-When it actually starts, then dies right away = Ignition switch for me.

-When you turned it off (while warm), then nothing happens when you try to restart = Main relay for me.

-When you take off from a light or being stopped and it cuts out/ loses power around 2-3k = o2 sensor for me.

-When your idling at a light and the car goes putt putt putt die, and then it just cranks and cranks and cranks but will not turn over = ignition coil for me.

None of these issues cause a CEL light to pop on…so if you have one on…it could be something different from what I experienced.

if it’s reading lean and the pcm is dumping fuel at it, it could. check the resistance of the ect sensor. then check voltage of the o2. if the ect went south, the o2 wouldn’t be far behind
and in fact, it’s quite possible that both may have crapped the bed

Ok, any advice on doing this? I honestly try to avoid anything electrical when i can. haha And im sure i cant be the only one wondering!!

Just check with a volt meter while the car is running?
