So in these past 2 days my car has had some trouble starting. I got it jumped yesterday and was able to drive it home.
This morning I tried to start it and it just won’t go. I’m worried that it maybe the Alternator but it could possibly just be a dead battery.
Is there a way for me to check without taking it to a mechanic. I’d also hate to spend money on a new bat and find out its my alternator.

If you have voltmeter you can check and see if the alternator is charging you should see about 14.5 volts on the batt at 2,000 RPM"s
Will that still register even if the battery is dead?
Simple test. Start car and unplug the neg. battery cable. Car dies than alt is no good. If it stays on your battery. But you my also have a short or a battery draw when your car is off. ex. amp radio cargo lights ect…
also depanding where your from most auto stores will check your chraging system for you at no charge. Kragen autozone…
Yes it will charge even if the batt can not store the charge.
Do not un hook the batt when the car is run it is not good for the ECU.
I may check out a local autozone and see if they can check it for me.
I did buy the battey from them, so.
dont unhook the battery while running just like he said, also, the battery acts as a filter for all the bad stuff( i cant quite remember), they say it is murder on your electrical system…
Im pretty sure its just your battery, pray its not your alternator, my car is still on jackstands
check the battery at autozone or something and keep us updated.
Brought it to the mechanic this morning. I figured I’d better not risk it.
Had to jump it again in order to get it there. As I tried to start it before jumping, it sounded like it WANTED to start but just couldn’t.
Also, when I touched the pos and neg clamps together, they did have a little juice in them…

if your car starts with a jump while having a dead battery, and you can drive it, then you need a new battery and thats it, stop driving it your alternator is ganna get worn out trying to charge a battery thats no good
According to the mechanic its my fuel pump. We changed the fuel filter and it still didnt work, he believes that theres not enough gas getting to the engine.
Hes a reliable mechanic, has been working on my families cars for a while so I dont think hes trying to cheat me, problem is, that doesnt explain why if I jumped the car it would work…
$400 dollars possibly down the drain…

So I got the car back, and heres what was replaced.
Fuel Pump
Fuel Filter
Spark Plugs
Valve Cover Gasket
Total bill + labor $487.15
I told them to check the spark plugs before ANYTHING and apparently they didn’t listen.
The replaced thefuel pump and the plugs so I basically got fucked.
Granted, I saw the old fuel pump and the thing was pretty junked, so its probably better that I replaced it now than later. It just sucks to drop all that money at once…

So it was the fuel pump? that wouldn’t explain the fact that you could jump it? I really don’t know about that. That’s a lot of cash, I’m glad I opted to do it myself when I changed mine. I would’ve just ck the battery first. If you have a good battery you can have them test your alt. right after they put the battery in. But if it fixed the problem then all is well, just lost some cash to get you ass moving.lol
My 91 ls was doing that when i bought it. I had to jump it when i test drove it and as soon as i turned the key key off it was dead again. no lights no nuthin. then when i went to buy the car jumping didnt even work. so i replaced the battery and it started right up. the problem was that when i would turn on the lights or nething i would drop 500 rpm. :bawl: Damn alternator!!! So i took it out and had it rebuilt. it was only like $25:excite: :excite:
