i went through the helms tracing the ignition to the starting system and i believe it is in fact the a/t gear position switch (or what others have called it, the neutral safety switch). that was one of the later replacements on my to-do list as i didnt seem to get the ‘cant shift out of park’ syndrome anymore.
anywho, im pretty sure the problem is that the contacts inside get worn and the grease gets dirty. this prevents the starter from getting the signal from the ignition control unit. clean it up, brush off the tarnish, grease it back up and you should be good. im doing a full writeup and hopefully if it doesnt happen again in the next week we’ll be sure it was the culprit.
ok no it happened again, but briefly for only a minute or so. ive since mounted the main fuel relay back on the post (i left it dangling, and sometimes when i would wiggle it, it would start - loose connector wires?). i also fixed the pesky loose battery to chassis ground which was causing tons of problems (i upgraded it to 4ga a long time ago). all is well so far. :crosses fingers:
in case someone is skipping to the end of this thread, im starting a dedicated one for it.
These are the most common causes of not starting we users have come up with thus far from our own personal experiences. It is imperative you only use this as a guide in addition to owning a service manual. Here they are in somewhat descending order:
Ignition Coil: Test with voltmeter (<$10 multimeter from radio shack) via instructions in service manual. Replace with only Honda genuine OEM part or if you prefer, msd, just no aftermarket “OEM” replacement. Replace distributor cap and rotor if worn, and again, use only genuine Honda.
Ignitor: Test with voltmeter (<$10 multimeter from radio shack) via instructions in service manual. Replace with only Honda genuine OEM part or if you prefer, msd, just no aftermarket “OEM” replacement. Use Loctite on screws. Replace distributor cap and rotor if worn, and again, use only genuine Honda.
ok, my car doesnt start sometimes. like today, it souldnt start and i called my dad to come and help me push start it. we pushed it and it still didnt work. usually it does work when push starting. when it doesnt start, i wait like 20-30mins it turns back on. cap/rotor, ignition coil, and spark plugs are all new. the car not turning is a random thing. in the mornings it starts up, but i still have to hold the starter a bit longer. it doesnt start like right right away. please help!!
when this happens, wiggle the MFR and turn the key at the same time. if it turns over, then its the joints deteriorating. they need to be resoldered. also wouldnt hurt to refresh your grounding points or renew them all together.
welp right on the 7th day she wouldnt start for about a min. i noticed that sometimes i cant shift out of park because the solenoid that releases the lever when you press on the brake doesnt engage gotta turn the key off and back on and its a bitch to replace.
edit: i folded a piece of cardboard and shoved it under that lever so itll never lock again
when i start my car it goes up to 3000rpm it goes down below 800rpm…it sounds like the engine almost die for like 2 mins…the idle jus go up and down between 500rpm to 800rpm…i dont know whats wrong

wow, 3000rpm to warm up is pretty high,b normally iut stands at 2000rpm for warm up and rest at 750rpm.
As for jumpy rpm, check the following:
spark plug - if you havent replace them for a long time already, do it
distributor cap & rotor - if they were on your teg for over 2-3 years, take the cap out and inspect it (maybe rust at contact points)… but is better off change it anyway is its been there for more than 3 years.
spark plug wires - if they are old enough (12 yrs old or something) replace them…
grounding point - check your grounds, maybe some important grounding point is lose or disconnected.
fuel filter - replace it every… err… forgot hor many miles, but is 2 yrs and 30xxx miles i think or something like that.
air filter - replace it if you havent done it for a year or two.
just check the above stuff, has to be one of those.
My 90 Integra wouldn’t start one day it wouldn’t turn over or anything it didn’t make a sound. After about a full day of agrivation I found out it was the Main Relay Assembly, it’s a relay under the dash on the drivers side it’ll have Main Relay on it and it doesn’t gradually go out it just goes, leaving you stuck. It’s an $89.00 part and it’s a dealership only part. When I got my new one I bought two(just in case it happens again!)
i’ve had my 93 ls since Feb. and i’ve had it not start 4 or 5 times. today, when i went to start it (pressure plate has collapsed, i’m putting a new clutch in monday) to keep the motor nice and lubricated, and to hear my baby , it started fine. after about a min of idle…i got in it and hit the accelerator…it died. i tried to start it…it turned over but it didnt’ sound like it was firing. i continued trying to start it for about a min…then i smelled gas, so i stopped. what could this be?? i’m thinkin distributor or ignition system… please help!
I own a 1990 4 dr teg LS. I bought it about 3 months ago it had a few bugs with it including an auto transmission that is currently going bad. Durring the shift between 2nd and 3rd it doesnt shift until i rev it up to 5 and let it drop til 2 thousand and then it decides to shift. I’ve tried the vacuum modulator but no luck. But anyways. a few weeks after I got it I would turn it on and after a few minutes of running the engine light would come on and the car would set into limp mode ( When you accelerate it would only rev to 3000 rpm) I never actually figured this problem out. But every now and then the car will just not start no matter what I did. One day it will do this and the next it will have no problem starting up. One day I tried to turn it on and to no suprise it didnt start. I cranked it till the battery was almost dead so had decided to stop. The next day it cranked right up. About the next weekend I decided to change the oil since it hadnt been changed in a while. I put the key in to crank it but the battery was dead. So i said screw it and took the battery out to charge and changed the oil anyways. After this the next day i put the fully charged battery in and to no luck the car didnt start. Now its been that way ever since. Here are the symptons I have when putting the key in the ignition turning it ti start the engine light flutters constantly making a little noise along with the s3 light causing the shifter to not come out of park when the brake is depressed. The car cranks but does not start I’ve changed the sparkplugs to the Bosche Platinum’s, New distributor cap since the old one looked worn out. I’ve taken the Ignition module and the Coil down to Autozone to be tested and tested okay. The guy said if it werent these things that were causing my car to trip. then it might be the computer. I would like to keep this as my last resort to the problem before i buy another one. Can any one please help me out on these problems. I am very fustrated and tired of this already. if you have any tips please help.
i think its kind of shitty that you dont want people posting their problems in your forum. this is a forum and yes you have archived things. but alot of these ‘archives’ are dated and no longer contain valid link to pictures. and when there is nothing but a caption that says remove screws it doesnt get you very far without a picture. also i really like being able to talk and ask questions to others who may have had experience with the same problem. Anytime i search for something i get a minimum of 3 pages of threads to look through that doesnt make solving my problem any easier now that i have to read through 30-50 threads and trying to scavenge what little knowledge i can. if someone starts a thread and the topic has already been covered post a link to that similar thread and then be on your way. dont just tell them to search and leave it at that. this is a resource for information as well as communication. just my .02
I had my car for about a year and a half now. got stuck once cuz of the ignition coil and had that replaced. Now for the past few days I’ve had that trouble starting happen to me a couple of times like today at the beach and lucky it started after 5 minutes. Im gonna try everything you guys posted. Im also wondering if a MSD ignition would help. No matter what I still love my Teg to death! Thanks
I jumped into my teg 2 days ago, and the starter wasn’t engaging. No cranking at all. So I did a little research and found that the starting circuit consists of : ignition switch, clutch safety switch, and a starter relay.
So I researched and found the starter relay up under the dash. It was very hard to get to, but I managed and pulled it and tested it, worked fine.
Next I checked my ignition switch by testing the wires coming from it for continuity when the switch was turned on. All checked out fine.
So, that only leaves the clutch switch at the pedal. I was kinda getting tired, so I said the hell with it, and took the wires off the switch and crossed them, so now my car starts without pushing in the clutch. I am the only driver, so I don’t really consider this a safety issue.
Hope this might help others with a no-cranking issue.
rpm drop while applyin gas and eventually shutsoff
i think i probably have one of the most unique problems of all the “car wont start” posts.alright to basically make a long story short i was driving my automatic teg the other day, while i was applying gas to the engine my rpm was droping instead of increasing in a mannor of lagging.so i pulled over immidiately put the car in neutral and then drove off, the car was fine.so i finally got home and i parked up and waited in the car to see if it would shut off by its self, sure enough it did so,3 days later went in the car, it started right up. i tried to drive it and it did the same thing, one day later it started up.
i am completly assed out of assumtions as far as why the car is behaving this way.PLEASE HELP.recent oem replacements-cap+rotor,main relay, plugs are in fair condtion as well as wires, distributor change last year.no squeking or any noises from dist. at all.the engine is also receiving fuel, fuel filter change before summer of 04.ummmmm and thats about it.does anyone know why god or my integra is punishing me so bad?,its been pushed out of heavy traffic numerous amount of times, please help.
Hi Guys,
I thankyou in advance,
My car (93 da9) does not start after left in hot sun, I assumed this was the fuel relay (the orange light on the dash does not turn off), but it does not have spark of fuel either! Would this mean that it is not the main fuel relay that needs replacement?
I appreciate any input/advice.
