Carbon Fiber Hiro Rep Spoilers made by JDP - Group Buy

You both have valid points… The price really is good for what is being offered.

I just know how picky I (and some others) are, in general.

After doing fiberglass repair/replication and auto body work for the last decade, I fully understand what a painstakingly demanding job they have laid out for them… It just seems like JDP and their quality are wavering in the recent years.

But again, a lot of that has to do with me being overly picky. My brother received a ViS Racing bumper for his EK, the design being a replica of the BYS front bumper… Kevlar bottom lip and all. After about 40min of picking it apart and comparing it to the actual BYS we had, it just isn’t the same. Though it IS half the cost… Colin hit the nail on the head.

if you all dont like the fit and finish ill be glad to take one off your hands

Yea, im definitely satisfied with my wing but the imperfections are a little abundant. I dont ever really expect a picture perfect part but there are more imperfections in the end product than i was expecting. Not a complaint, just feedback. Regardless, im happy with it.

Mine is loosely on the market, 1500+shipping+paypal fee+gas money to the post office+lunch money for the afternoon i ship it+7$ just because

after being told over and over for 8 months, “be patient. the quality will be worth the wait. it takes time to give good quality”, I hopened my wing is up to par with the quality that we’ve been told they will be…

The second prototype has now been produced and test fitted on my car. So far I’m really happy with the design. To re-cap why I wanted to re-design the brackets:

 • Original design didn’t extend far enough into the wing to grip it effectively
 • Original design had a tendency to twist out of place when tightened

Additional benefits to the new design:

 • Much more sturdy and reliable than the original
 • Easier to install without someone to help you
 • Brackets could be modified to be bolted thru the original holes instead of clamping like it does now
 • Cheaper to produce

Downsides to the new design:

 • Heavier

So, on to the pics… Here are the prototype brackets (one is drilled/tapped, the other is not because these are just for test fitting purposes). I’m going to try and work with the machine shop to see if they can round the corners for us without any additional cost.

Installed. Please note that I could not find the right size set screw at the local hardware store so cap head screws are pictured - don’t worry, the final product will include set screws. And each set will come with 8 screws. The bracket worked plenty well with 2 per side but it’s designed to use 3 per side and I will be giving 2 extra screws with each set in case you loose some.

I didn’t like the idea of the wing sitting directly on top of the paint on the hatch so I will be including a little padding with the brackets. In this picture I used some sheet gasket I had laying around and cut it to fit then used some adhesive to attach it to the wing. Others have used double stick tape here which is an added safety precaution which I don’t feel is needed with these new brackets. Plus with tape you’re adding a little more thickness and it doesn’t allow for you to easily remove and re-install. The gasket sheet I’ll be providing with each set of brackets will be a rubber cellulose instead of the paper stuff pictured here (which will be better for exterior applications where water will be present).

As you can see, it’s very thin and not noticeable once installed.

Now, to get on with the actual groupbuy portion of this post…

What’s included?

 • 2 brackets (one left, one right)
 • 8 stainless M5 8mm set screws (6 required + 2 spares)
 • Rubber gasket material to be placed between wing and hatch
 • Priority Mail shipping within USA
 • Paypal fees

What’s the cost?
This will be dependent on how many brackets we make and what material we choose. I’ve got about $150 into the project already for the prototypes and this cost is factored into the pricing below. I’m not making a profit on these, I’ve rounded the prices up to the nearest dollar to make things simple but other than that you’re paying for my actual material/production costs. Additionally, I will be paying the same full price as everyone else for my set. We need to place an order of at least 10 sets for the machine shop to produce them at this cost. These are “worst case” prices, if we order more than 10 sets the price will come down a little. It won’t be a large discount (~$1-5 per set) so I’m not going to crunch those numbers until we get a final quantity at which point I’ll give everyone an updated cost.

Option 1: Mild Steel
10 Sets = $63/set

Option 2: Stainless Steel
10 Sets = $67/set

Option 3: Mild Steel w/ gold zinc similar to the OEM gold hardware that came on our cars (http://bit.ly/135jjgQ)
10 Sets = $73/set

*Cash pickup price will be ~$8 less than what you see above
**If ordering multiple sets you’ll save ~$6 on each additional set as I will not double charge for shipping
***Exact pricing will be determined after a final quantity and material are determined

Since all the sets will need to be the same (MS, SS or zinc’d) we’ll need to take a vote on which will be produced. You should have all already received an email from me with instructions on how to place your vote for which option we’ll choose. I’ll update this thread as soon as I start getting input from everyone. Please do not hesitate to post or email if you have any questions. Thanks!

Voting will end 12/21/14. I would like a final count of brackets to be made by 01/05/15 and will require payment in full no later than 01/09/15.

The better buy would be the stainless will last longer .

Yes, stainless or the zinc will hold up to the elements, the mild steel will rust rather quickly. If we end up doing mild steel then I would suggest everyone throw a coat of paint or clear coat or something on them so they don’t rust.

With that said I’m not sure if this is even going to happen, I’ve received very little interest since I emailed everyone and posted all the details. As of right now there’s only interest in 6-7 sets of brackets. We need 10+ orders otherwise I won’t be producing them.

I’ll take a set… you did a lot of work to make them. Dont want it to be for nothing.

^Mike, you got my email, correct? Just wanted to make sure it made it to everyone. Do you have a preference on mild steel, stainless or zinc? So far it’s looking like there’s the most demand for zinc or stainless. Today’s the last day for votes on what type will be produced and then I’ll spend the next week getting final quantities from everyone. Looks like we’re right on the edge of having the minimum 10 orders.

werd… emailed

Colin,

Thanks again for tackling the hardware project. Based on the way I installed my wing I honestly don’t think I need the hardware. However, I want to make sure that you reach the minimum. Keep me updated, I may buy a set if it’s the difference of putting them into produced for everyone.

Well, although I underestimated the demand there would be for these brackets we just barely made it to the minimum we need. Here’s how the final vote came out:

Mild Steel: 1
Stainless: 3
Gold Zinc: 7

So with a landslide victory we’ll be going with Gold Zinc. As of right now there are 11 sets which will be produced. The first 7 are people who participated in this JDP group buy and the others are just other people I found who need brackets as well.

FINAL COST Payment in full is due by 01/09/15
$72/set shipped/paypal’d
$64/set cash/pickup price

Payment in full is due by 01/09/15. My paypal email is 1colin (at) gmail (dot) com. I will not place the order until all quantities confirmed and all payments have been received. Previously I was told that production time would be about 2 weeks but I will get an updated turn-around when I place the order.

so if im seeing it right, this is just a straight up clamp. no holes HAVE to be drilled in the wing to use this?

Yes, this is correct, there is no drilling or any modification to the car required. You should just be able to throw the clamps on, tighten them and away you go. And you can remove the wing and brackets with no damage done to the car other than some marring of the underside of the hatch where the set screws go.

Just checking in and reminding everyone that I will need payment by 01/09/15. As of right now:

If all payments are not received by 01/09/15 then I will unfortunately have to cancel the production run :frowning:

Whoops almost forgot about this, been traveling for work ALOT lately. Anyways, I just sent the payment!

I almost want the hardware, just in case lol.

Thanks for doing the legwork on this one Colin, I’m sure we all appreciate it!

Thanks Jonathan. I went ahead and updated my post to reflect your payment.

Sean, lmk if you want a set
