catastrophic failure

i have no idea AT ALL what just happened.

i just got the driver side axel and the alternator belt changed. i noticed that when i press the gas i hear a whining noise like a vacuum kind of. i listened under the hood and it sounds like its coming from the belt. if that has any impact on the story at all.

but anyway, as i was driving i noticed that 1st 2nd and 3rd gear was making a weird noise after i would shift into them. and when shifting into 3rd i couldnt press on the gas pedal. but listen to this, i would press on the clutch, shift, ease off the clutch and press on the gas. ONLY when i pressed on the gas after shifting it would make a high pitch noise that sounded kind of like a squeaking belt just not as high pitch. 4th and 5th gear was fine. but i was pulling into the parking lot of walmart and the car just shut off. just shut off. no noises or anything. it just shut off.

it shut off as if you just turned the key, it was just the motor that shut off. the lights and everything were still on. it was weird. when i looked under the hood, there was radiator fluid all over the left side of the engine bay. all over the battery, the intake, the top of the hood, the entire left side. i looked at all the hoses and everything to see if one of them might have burst or come loose but nothing. all of them were fine.

but i tried to start the car back up and it wouldnt start for a while. but after about 10 minutes it finally started and i parked it and left it. i have no idea what the hell happened or why the car just shut off the way it did. i was thinking that maybe the fluid leaked on the battery and maybe shorted it or something but then that wouldnt explain how all the electrical stuff was still on.

but anyone that can help please guide me…

Did you look at the temp guage to see if it was running hot? You are sure it was radiator fluid right? Was the radiator busted? Did you drive the car anymore after it did this?

im pretty sure the temp was fine before it shut off. and yes im 100% positive its radiator fluid and i only turned it back on for a little bit to get it into a parking space…

Well the antifreeze had to come from somewhere… Did you look to see if the radiator had cracked anywhere?

if there was a crack what area would i be looking in? because from what i can see its fine. but even if the radiator broke itself or something, how is
ONLY the left side of the engine bay wet…

Look on the outside surface of the radiator… The bottom line is, the antifreeze is coming from somewhere obviously and it’s not supposed to be spraying around in the engine. I can only suggest where it may be coming from… It’s up to you to find it… If it cranks back up and runs fine at idol, look around for a second and see if you can tell anything

cool thanks. ill do that. worst case scenario im going to be buying a new radiator? hhmmm…

well do you have any input on anything else with my issue?

No I wouldn’t say that’s the worse case scenario because we really don’t know what it is yet… Having the alternator belt and driver’s side axle replaced just doesn’t add up to having antifreeze sprayed everywhere in the engine bay… Maybe someone else will chime in and help out because I really don’t know of anything else.

cool thanks man. youve helped me out…

hopefully someone else can put their input…

it could be that the coolant hydro locked the intake filter and that’s what caused it to shut off like the op said if it starts and you can get it to idol fill it up with coolant and check for leakage your probably going to have to bleed the cooling system of air so you can put the cap on and let it build up pressure so the leak becomes visible it would really be better if you had a radiator pressure tester but if you don’t mind bleeding the system and what not that’s prolly your best bet.

yea… see the thing about filling the radiator is that earlier today before i left i tried to fill it with some 50/50 and it was acting weird. it was violently bubbling out the top of the radiator and it there was a lot of smoke coming from it. i had the cap off and the bleed valve open. then i put the cap on and left the valve open so it could build pressure a little more so the bubbling would stop.

but the hydro lock thing makes sense.that probably what it was.

but im going to try and get it to leak again so i can see whats going on with this. ive been researching all over the net and found that it could be that my thermostat is bad and not doing what its supposed to or my lower radiator hose is going out. or a bunch of other little dumb things. but im going to run through a bunch of little “troubleshooting” things so to say…

aight man just let us know how its going.

the coolant hydro lock the air filter? huh?

i highly doubt it’s hydro locked. your engine would have to take a good gulp for that to happen. probably several different issues going on here. you’ll want to figure them out one by one. start with the leak first and go from there. i wouldn’t try finding it by running the engine. fill it with water and use a pressure tester.
in all honesty, i think you should have it towed to a shop. prefferably the one that did the axle and belt as some of your issues you describe may be related to something they’ve done.

its not hydro lock
if only the left side was wet check the water pump and water pipe.

it has more then just one issue drain the fluid in the trans also

have you check your timing belt?

yea. it has a some slack on it but it doesnt look damaged or worn out. should i change it anyway?

he’s confused. it’s actually the right side. he states coolant got all over the intake and battery. otherwise, i would have figured it may have been the overflow tank. good call to check the water pump though. it would make a whining noise, as described, if it shit the bed. would explain the coolant issue as well.
OP, you didn’t sound too positive of the temp when this was occurring. maybe try filling the cooling system with water and fire it up. have someone lightly hit the throttle. see if the noise is coming from the water pump area. maybe the water pump went and a hose burst, getting coolant on the distributor causing it to die. i dunno.
but yeah, fill the system with water and see if it fires up. if it does, listen around the water pump area and look for a leak at the hoses. you really have to look carefully and squeeze them to find cracks/breaks. you may have missed that.

keep us updated

I agree with Welfare here. Either the water pump is gone, hose is cracked or maybe you never put the rad cap on properly when you filled it earlier and it let go out one side. Probably got some electrical stuff wet (Distributor, batt cables, connectors) and wouldn’t start from that point.

I don’t think it would be the water pump, that’s on the driver’s side of the engine bay. OP said coolant all over passenger side. Check your oil to see if it’s milky white, non dirty oil colored. I’m leaning towards head gasket being blown, causing high pressure in cooling system then crap being blown out of one of the hoses or radiator cap.
