Changing my timing belt????????

I can not get the bolt off of the alternator pulley that goes into my crank underdrive pulley. I have an air compressor that holds 150 psi and I use a 1/2 inch drive air rachet. The timing belt has broke during my rebuild and now I cannot break the bolt loose to put on another one. does anyone have any suggestions. I can hold the pulley still and the crank will not move but the bolt will not come loose. I cannot use a breaker bar because it will move the crank to much. What can I do? This is the last thing that I need to do. Thanks guys

Heat that bitch up

heat it up.

you can also use a screwdriver or something to keep the flywheel from rotating and then use a breaker bar

or you could buy the proper tool for loosening the bolt. it fits into that hex shape on the crank pulley and you can use a 1/2 in ratchet to hold it still. then use another 1/2in ratchet and socket with a breaker bar to bust the bolt loose. I’ve used mine probably over 15 times (my buddies cars and my own) makes that bolt a breeze.

If you still dont want to spend the money and your car is manual, try what I did when some kid had an aftermarket pulley (no hex for the tool).
Put the car in 1st gear and have someone hold the brakes as hard as they can and keep the clutch out. the trans should keep the crank still then while you break the bolt loose with a breaker bar.

get a new impact gun that you best bet but in desperate times calls for desperate measures you could always socket an longratchet then just crank the motor 1 of 2 things could happen though bolt may break and break loose at the same or bolt may not break just breakloose. But what ever you do don’t heat that bolt it is connected to you crankshaft and any excessive heat to the crank isn’t good. Just my 2 cents and how i did my when i didn’t have the reatarded amount of tools i have now.

are you sure that will work? ive seen them do that on other cars but fron the direction the engine spins when you crank on it wouldnt it be spinning in the direction that would tighten the bolt instead of breaking it loose?

using the starter would only tighten the bolt more. He is right tho, excessive heat is bad for the crank seal that is right behind the timing belt cover in the oil pump.
